Default Sunroof at Track

Silly question, but searching isn't helping me here. Do people remove the sunroof for track days? Is that even safe? I sure would gain some helmet clearance if I took it off.

I removed the interior sunroof paneling and that gave me a little more room. But I still have a hard time getting close enough to the wheel with my helmet rubbing on the thing.

I wonder if that saratoga top gives any more clearance compared to a stripped roof panel.

You have to run with the sunroof in place and closed.

Yeah, I figured someone would say that. I guess my only other option then is welding a sheet of aluminum in there. Classy.

Not really. Find a spare sunroof and modify its shape ie make a raised bump/bubble like a hood bulge to make clearance. Simply change the sunroof out for track use. Easypeasy. Make a raised lip and add a gun turret to get those pesky slow pokes out of your way. Win Win.

Heck, I've got a spare sunroof in black that I'm trying to get rid of in the Seattle area! Off a '83 944.

On our Lemons car we're welding in a raised roof for cage/helmet clearance. Not pretty, but it'll work.

Ultimately I intend bonding my original sunroof panel in, but in the short term I have removed the inner panel and both front catches and made up two alloy plates that hold the front of the roof down. There fixed to the existing holes.

I have gained a goof inch more head room.

a pair of track seats will have you sitting lower in the car and offers more head room...Recaro Speeds or similar are nice dual purpose seats.

I'm only 6'0 and have a sparco evo2 seat on side mounts bolted to the floor, probably the lowest seating position available. With a helmet on I have to take out the bottom padding on the seat to get enough headroom, so I'm sitting on fiberglass. These cars aren't tall people friendly.
