Default Clunk when letting off the gas

924s 1988 49k
When letting off the gas abruptly I hear a clunk same with while riding and put in the clutch it will clunk.
New Mm looking at the transmission mounts the top of the mount has a smaller rectangle rubber that is down about 3/8 of an inch from the top of the mounting bracket. Is this normal to have this gap or are the mounts shot?
Axles are tight!

Agreed... I bet you have about 100k miles on the car and have the original rubber-center clutch disk?

Clutch. The rubber insolator is broken & upon accell or decell the noise you hear is the 3 metal "limp home" clutch splines. Sorry :/

Poly fill the trans mount, if it doesn't go away, look at the clutch. New motor mounts will stress the trans mount more and the transaxle will slap around on a late car,. Can you easily move the transaxle around by hand when it's mounted? If so it could be your problem, but it could also still be your clutch. You'll want to Poly fill your mount anyways when your trans is down to do a clutch, so you don't lose much by doing it and hoping it's not the clutch.

There is an easy way to check if it is the clutch... with the car in gear, crawl underneath, pop the large rubber plug off the front of the transaxel (just forward of the axles) and turn the drive shaft. If there is significant movement it is likely the clutch disk... you may even hear the metallic clunk coming from the bellhousing while you do this.

I just replaced mine... here is my thread, which includes help and suggestions from other Rennlisters:
https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...ew-clutch.html

Don't be overly intimidated by the job, I did it alone with the help of a transmission jack and a friend who helped me for about an hour to replace the torque tube.
Main how-to for the clutch replacement.

It's also easy to check the motor mounts...LOOK inside the engine compartment with a flashlight! Had this issue w/PT Cruiser. Everytime it autoshifted, CLUNK! CLUNK!

Put in aerospace grade engine mounts, created by one of the retired Rockwell Engineers out here. Oversized for that car, but I've no fear it's ever going to clunk nor shake the car upon shifting ever again,
