Q: Would cutting the bottom of the spare well in an 85.5 944 allow for removing a torque tube... without the need to drop the torsion assembly/suspension?

Nope, the top of the torque tube bellhousing will drag along the underside of the gas tank and end up backing up against the inside of the rear bumper. Why sacrifice the spare well? It takes 30 mins to undo the suspension and pry down the torsion bar.

Even if you left the torsion carrier up, you would have the headache of having to coax the TT out the back. I dropped the torsion carrier about 1-2" the other day and tried to pull it back, and it was a bitch even before I got to the spare well. Trust me, just find a broom handle or something and get to prying. It's way easier than cutting metal and dropping the bumper.
In fact, the square flange on the front most end of the TT probably won't fit through the rear exit unless the torsion carrier is dropped at least an inch or two. And even before you get that flange back there, it will be pressed up against the top of the tunnel and will get in the way. There are also brake lines near the front that run through the tunnel, don't want to risk those.
