Breather is not necessary.
Put the cap back on.
The system is under vacuum by being routed into the intake tract ahead of the throttle body...

I put the cap back on and the engine seems to be running a few degrees warmer than usual (given similar weather, speed, rpms etc.), not sure if it's just a coincidence
