Default my LAST sunroof thread!!!!!!!!!!

so after installing my lil plastic gears the "wrong way" and going through a gross of them, i decided to look around alittle more on the topic. Clarks garage said that the clutch being too tight caused the gears to strip, so i loosened mine all the way up. I put the gears all the way down into the unlock position, set the risers all down, and tightened the clutch hub till it JUST made enough to rise the latches. YIPPIE..the roof works perfectly, up down, lock, unlock, no gear strippage!

Anyway, just glad to not have to buy any more gears, except the ones to replace nine-44's that i "borrowed" to fix my car. Ive had my car for two weeks now, and i have to say that these cars are built smart-ly or at least they make sense. Thanks for the help-

Question: What kind of 13mm wrench did you use that was thin enough to hold just the inner 13mm nut while you loosened the outer 13mm nut? I tried to do this but couldnt get my wrench on just one of the nuts at a time...

I didn't talk to him, but he may have used a bicycle tool for that. Look at a local bike chop, they have pretty thin tools for doing bearings on a bicycle. 13mm is very common on bikes too, should be an easy tool to find. Or 1/2" will work too, both sizes are almost exact, actually 1/2 is slightly tight. Good luck

Thanks nine-44 I will look into that. I sure am tired of having to be paranoid every time I try to disengage my roof panel. The one time I didnt watch closely I fried the gears..... Aint life grand!

Yep, installed new gears and stripped those right away! It's the slip clutch that should be adjusted. Thanks!

waiting for delivery of 6 gears from Paragon...........

WHY DOESN'T ANYONE MAKE METAL REPLACEMENT GEARS???????

ARRGHH!

Am I missing something? Is there a reason that metal gears wouldn't work correctly?

FAILSAFE - better to strip a few cheap plastic gears than burn out the motor or destroy something else... bottom line is this was a complex way to achieve a simple tilt mechanism... kinda overkill IMHO.

How easy is to do damage these gears? What's the right way to use the roof? I don't wanna mess anything up cause mine is working good.

To remove the roof, turn the ignition to the very first position and hit the button. The arms that hold the roof will drop and unlock the roof, unlatch the two latches in the front, push it up a bit and it should slide back and come off.

Convert to manual. It's fun and easy.

SidViscous, I'd love to do that, but I haven't seen a good writeup on how to or a list of what parts are needed, so I'm afraid to go that route.

I've posted before. All you need is the Manual clasps that mount onto the sunroof itself. Put those on and see how the tab will met up to the sliding mechanisim. You should be able to remove the arm and cover bracket and it will mount up fine.
