What does this whine sound like?
Does anyone have any idea what is causing this whine? Could it be related to any of the work recently done to the car? I just picked up the car so I can't say if it was here before or not. However, I do not have that whine on my other car.
Recent work:
water pump & gaskets
timing belt, tensioner rollers, idler roller,
radiator & hose
balance shaft belt, tensioner, idler roller, seals
valve cover gasket
and some other stuff like vc gasket, thermostat, etc.
(sorry iphone video)

I have the same whine in my S2. There was a thread on this not to long ago.
I am guessing that the balance shaft belt has incorrect tension, it is supposed to be quite slack

Thanks for the reply. I remember seeing those whine threads and found 2 recent ones. The sound is almost the same so I'm guessing it's the same issue. Now if only there was a thread with pictures showing the steps to remedy it. More searching when I have time.

I just recently did my belts, water pump and idlers, pretty sure i got the tension right but still I have the whine.
I even took my belt covers off again to recheck the belt tension and distance from the idler wheel.
What is your proceedure to get the right tensnion on the balance belt Spencer ?

That was the sound mine made to a 'T'. In my case, belt had the correct amount of tension, but it was hitting the idler. Make sure there is a small gap between the belt and idler, and also ensure that if you re-tension it, you move the tensioner clockwise.

That sounds a little bit like my wife when she finds out that I bought more stuff for my car.

. this is my experience as well. when i recently replaced my belts and started the car it whined just like that, i consulted with my friend who is an expert mechanic on the cars and he told me the belt was too tight. loosened it a bit (180 degree twist test) and it stopped. i occasionally hear it when the car is cold and the ambient temp is cool (say below 50). once the car warms up, it stops. this indicates to me that the belt is still slightlt too tight.

Due to this thread I was inspired to take a closer look at my whining S2 this afternoon. I found out that my balanace belt roller was in fact touching the belt, I readjusted the roller and the whining disappeared
I was able to turn my belt about 160 degrees so I guess the tension is within limits.
This took me about 20 minutes in all

In short : just loosen the 6 (or so) 6mm bolts (10mm wrench) and the upper half of the belt cover comes of.
Then you can do the torsion twist test and see if your belt is hitting the roller, you should have about the thicknes of a credit card in clearence between the belt and the roller When tightening the roller it is easy to move it out of place.
To adjust the tension of the belt or roller you will need a 17 and 27mm wrench.
The belt tightens by turning the tensioner wheel clockwise.
