Default Steering Column Bushing

I went to replace the clear bushing in my steering column today on my early 85 while I was replacing my speedometer cable and I ran into a snag. I removed the screws on the lower half of the ignition switch cover and separated the plastic slightly but was unable to remove the lower portion as it appears part of it is hung up and tucked under the dash. I then removed the 6mm allen bolt on the switch assembly from underneath but the combo switch assembly still didn't budge.

At this point I thought that I should consult the forum and see if anyone has any tips on pulling the metal switch assembly and cover so that I can replace the bushing. I didn't want to go any farther and risk breaking something.

the cover is just jammed in there with 2 screws holding it on.
there is probably a wire connector hung on the plastic.

remove the gauges and see if you can work it out from the backside

Sounds good. Is there any other bolts holding the ignition switch assembly onto the steering shaft other than the 6mm allen bolt that is removed from the lowed dash pad access hole?

Makes sense. The locking detent would need to be retracted. Perhaps that's why it would't budge. I missed that step and didn't even consider that. Thank you!
