Door Speaker Deal - Audiobahn
FYI, found this cool electronics store (TMS-Electronics.com) that is selling the Audiobahn AS46Q 4x6 speakers (highly recommended for our front doors by several Rennlisters), for a mere $45! I ordered them yesterday, and received a tracking number right away! The speakers were shipped last night, and I should get them today!
Great prices and fast shipping--I like that combo!
PS--I am not affiliated with TMS--just found them using Yahoo.

Yep, have them in the doors on the 86. Its a shame there aren't holes for my extra 6.5's in the back of the 86....the 944S picked up some 6x9's lately....which I regret putting the time into mounting (they overpower my Kappa 4x6 fronts, time for some new amps).

Any mounting tips Rob?
It's a snowball effect with stereo improvements! I wanna limit it to just the front speakers. Hopefully, they'll sound decent because I have no plans on ripping out the back windows to change the speakers!

Andy,
You know, you can change the rears without ripping out the windows, done it several times.
Also, thanks, Ordered me a pair as well
Hope they have a few in stock!

Hope TMS appreciates all the Rennlist business generated!
I replaced the rears in my 88 last year. The P/O left the vinyl un-tucked, so it was easy to remove the panel screws, and bend back the panel enough to get in there.
The S2 is stock, and I don't feel like leaving the vinyl loose around the back window.
You have a better (easier) way??

The rears....you dont have to remove the glass. The trick is patience in getting the vynl back under the seal without ripping (I use fat screw drivers and grease up the vynl and rubber beforehand (with protectant). It makes the process easier IMHO. For 6x9's, don't do it. It takes a dremel and a template...not much more then that. I plan on keeping the car for a long time so I decided to go ahead and do it (had 6x9's lying around). Now I somewhat regret it. There's more bass, for sure, but the rears overpower my fronts now....doesn't sound right.
I'm going to buy a 200w amp for the fronts and a 120 or 150w amp for the rears in the future. MY conclusion - if you want something larger for the back, get 6.5 components.

i paid a pro to do the rears on my car, and the next week did the rears with my brother. it took about 15 minutes each side, and it was near freezing out so it was not fun trying to hold and line up screws.
it was very easy. just get a big piece of stirng, push out at the bottom rear corner and dont drop. then wrap the string in the groove, put a little string in the car, and start pulling, while you pull use a big screwdriver to gently (big so it doesnt catch and rip the vinyl) tuck any stray vinyl under the rubber.
i changed the radio, and replaced all four speakers. thats enough for my old ears.

I put 5x7's in the rear of my 88...P/O had the holes drilled already. Sounded better...but still kinda lame (for an expensive sports car, anyway). The cloth interior really sapped the trebble! I find with the leather, even the crappy old stock speakers sound more lively and less like a pillow was resting on top of em!
So Tom, you took out the windows then? I had the thought of just using an exacto to CUT the vinyl, then glue it back down with rubber cement. Another Porsche brain fart! "Vy vood zay vant to change zee rear speakerzzz??"

Hey Ken-
I did research, and it seems these speakers will look very stock...the grills they come with look a lot like our originals....and they go in with no mods. They have a broader freq response (more lows) than most 4x6's out there.
If you want, when I throw them in, I can report back (w/photos).
PS--I bring my car to the mechanic next week, to sort out the mystery front wheel/suspension noise you noticed at the AutoX! Keep your fingers crossed!

Yes they look very nice and sound quality, for the price especially (they aren't Kappas). The speaker provides a great replacement for oem, and will function fine if you decide to wire them to an amp later on. They will also sound great in a 'system' with subwoofers and such (just use a crossover to block the bass to them in this situation). For the dollar, I doubt you can find a better pair of 4x6s with the same look for our cars.

Andy,
Pictures would be great. I'm not in dire need to replace them as the 944 isn't my daily driver so I can wait. But the old paper ones are really wearing thin. I don't think I'd ever put an amp or subs in. I trying to lose as much weight as possible from the car for autocross purposes. I don't need to be adding more. But having a decent stock like setup would be great.
Good luck at the mechanic! Let us know what he says. BTW, your S2 looks great! I hope you're enjoying it!

Here is a link to Brrt50Cal's profile, and a photo of an installed Audiobahn (minus the grill):

Thanks Ken! I'll be enjoying it much more when it doesn't go "plunk" at every stop sign! I too have no amps or subs, and just want a stock-plus setup for now.

Andy,
once you get the window out there is just a little glue holding the vinyl to the sheet metal. very easy to peel away, then it is easy access to the speakers. we have alpines all around in both my 944 and my brother's 944. for grills we used the grills from $30 pr radio shack specials. if i sell the car it is not worth the energy to put the paper or radio shacks in place of the alpines.
I have a mid priced alpine am/fm/cd, and my brother's came with a similar blaupunct. i dont think there is much difference in sound quality.
