How much larger can I go with front tire size?
I have an '86 Turbo with phone dials (7" wide up front and 8" in the rear I believe). In the back I've gone up from the factory 225/50 R16 to 245/45 R16, which of course results in a wider tire and almost the same diameter (24.7" vs. 24.9). I'd like to do the same in the front as I need new front tires and the car is understeering.
So, any problems with replacing the 205/55 R16 tires with 225/50 R16? The diamter is almost dead on. Who has done this?

I've had 225's up front and 245's on the back and it worked just fine, and the car had a good balance to it. I had that set up on phone dials and on fuchs.
225 is as wide as I would go on 7 inch wide wheel though...

Cool thanks guys. This understeering is so boring. It has to go! Swapping the tires and correcting my toe in should do the trick (it was 1/4" after I swapped my steering rack!)

Ian, the car feels GREAT on track,
I just spend two days, well, drove just one, on one of our most challenging track, and it was great !
There was just one faster car, and it was a GT3..
That understeering and oversteering is also a matter of air pressure in tires! and of course the suspension set up.

This is very true, you can do wonder with air pressure in tires, for tirewear reasons I'm going to be running 255 R Compounds all around when I get 2 more 9 inch wheels and the money to get a full set of R compounds.....

yup, I bought 3 month ago brand new tires, Uniroyal Rainsport 1,
and they were great for daily drivin' , especially on moist and rainy conditions. But I do some track-driving, and now they are basically history. So I gotto buy a new set. I've heard some pretty good stories about Michelin Pilot Sports.
Good for daily driving and track..
But rather expensive

Two things to ask about on this thread, if I may?
I've got a spare set of original wheels for my S2 and was considering putting the spare rear 225's on the front. What effect will this have?
The handbook recommends 35psi front and rear. Has anybody experimented with different pressures and what effect did it have (other than tyre wear) on the handling of the car.
