Shift linkage keeps falling off ****
Is there a piece that holds the shifter linkage (big tube down center of car)?
I don't remember taking anything off, but who knows.

the shifter rod? it attaches to the tranny mechanism and it has a bolt that wont let it slide out

The shift rod to the shifter lever uses a "C" clip to hold them together. Sometimes the clip will fall out, especially if the pin on the side of the shift lever has worn badly, or someone changed the shift lever and used the old clip, allowing the rod and lever to separate. Also, between the lever and the rod these is a spring (wavy) washer, it's a 10mm (inside diameter) washer.
Part number 900.116.005.02 available from Pelican Parts for the princely sum of 75 cents. It's listed as a "Door lock **** serrated lock washer" but if you check the PET part number they are the same thing. The spring (wavy) washer is NLA in the PET, but any 10mm wavy washer will work.

An easy fix is to grind off the weld for the old shifter pin, drill it (and the shift rod) to 7/16", put a piece of 7/16 rod into the lever and drill and tap the end for a small screw/washer to hold it in the rod.
...or do the bolt/bearings conversion.

I get it now it's sliding at the front, so you are missing the clip.

Hopefully you got a couple. If your shifter pin is worn (barrel shaped), the clip will likely pop off again. I think we should all carry a spare of these clips next to our spare dme relays. And some medium or big channel locks to help reassemble this connection on the side of the road.

read one of the many articles on fixing that barrel shaped pin - there's an article on my web site that I wrote, there are others around the web (www.wbnoble.com)
