http://milwaukee.craigslist.org/cto/4183157309.html (Looks good to me!)

What do you guys think? My Dad agrees ATM but I must wait until tonight when my mom gets home. Then the typical parent-child talk and if all goes well: tomorrow will be the first calls!

Karl, buy that '83. Even if you blow the motor driving home, you can make your money back in parts without even trying. Find out if the motor has been fully rebuilt, or just the head. Either way, that's a deal if you're willing to belts/WP yourself, and if the clutch feels ok.

The fact that it's an '83 means you'll never need to deal with powered racks and aging sunroof motors/gears. Who cares about the dent, you can deal with it. You can always swap that panel later.

That's what I'm thinking, that's also the only one I showed my Dad. how much do you reckon it would be to get that dent out?? or replace??

My concern isn't the dent... that's no big deal. The bigger concern is, if that guys wants to try and hide a big dent with a bra, I imagine what he's hiding about the mechanicals is pretty significant.

The dent's easy to get looking "pretty good" by yourself, and probably in the range of a few hundred to get fixed by someone who knows what they are doing. (assuming it's just a fender smash as it appears to be). Or, get a larger cup size bra to cover it up.

So when I call, how should I go about the "interrogation"?

I thought you were waiting 'til April to buy a car...

Basically, there isn't much to ask, since you can't believe squat about what they will say. You can ask about obvious stuff, like the dent. Other than that, much beyond: "is it still for sale?" is probably a waste of time.

Let me rephrase that sorry. What I meant to ask was is there anything I shouldn't say? I know what aspects and parts about the car I should mention (i.e. papers and receipts, specs, parts, whether it's broken or not ect.). But is there anything I shouldn't mention? like the dent. Should I display any emotions or any enthusiasm over the car or it's price, given my well-known over-excitement and ability to rush things?

Cuda, there was multiple plans posed by my Dad. There first, waiting until spring, only applied to my Uncle's car. Summer only applied only if I was sure I would be able to go to California to look for one. This one, being only 5 hours away and at such a price, he may or may not want to go sooner.

And seeing as my semester ends after next week, giving me a three week break from school and work, I could have it this month maybe!

But I must wait until tonight( in two hours really) for my parents to get home and discuss it. And if the '83 doesn't seem reliable then I'll check out the '85 which is conveniently in the same city!

When buying a car (or most anything else in life where the price is negotiable), show zero emotion. In fact, act like you really don't want to buy it at all, but that for the right price you just might help the seller out by taking this pile 'o junk off his hands. That's the attitude.

Of course you mention the dent, the high mileage, and anything else of significance.

Ask how long he's owned it (but don't believe a word of what he tells you).
Ask why he's selling it (but don't believe a word of what he tells you).
Ask what work has been done on it (but don't believe a word of what he tells you).
Ask if he is aware of any issues with it (but don't believe a word of what he tells you).

Karl,

I got a fine stragety for you.

call on 75 cars. and offer 0.40 x price asked for each one.

the first guy who calls you back, or says yes, go see it.

if another calls back add it to the itinerary.

then we'll have the community give you a basic checklist for an informal ppi.

This isn't sarcasm right?

Just Kidding! That sounds like an excellent plan, but I don't think I can find 75 cars. Also I think that's a lot of cars! I can do that with about 10 though. Hold on a sec...

oh, pardon me, I just assumed you were halfway to 75 already.

you're not interested in buying now, so you keep that attitude....

you might be surprised when someone starts negotiating with you to improve your offer.

DO THIS ESPECIALLY WITH ANY NEW ENGLAND CAR.

you could end up with a fairly decent '44 by playing hardball
