Default 944S to Spec 944 (SP1)

Does any know what has to be done to get an 87 944S into SP1? I figure the engine and trans, but is there more?

A 944S would be an SP3 car.

According to the Spec 944 rules, "the chassis of a 944S can be used as a donor" - so I'm reading that as only the chassis can be used.

I don't know that there are significant differences in the transmission ratios. Should be engine, you can use the existing wiring harness but need a couple jumpers for the differences in DME controls.

If the chassis is good, nothing major to overcome.

Right, I guess that's my question. What is different between an 87 944 and an 87 944S in terms of the body work, electrical and suspension components?

4.1 Chassis Swaps A 944 spec may utilize any year chassis in the above eligible models as well as the 1987-1988 944S and 1989 944. No other 944 or 924 type chassis may be used to build up a 944 spec. In all cases body work, engine, transmission, engine electrical and suspension components must conform to the list of eligible models and to the modifications expressly listed in these rules.

The body, suspension and most of the running gear will be just fine.

The S trans differs quite a bit from that of a regular NA. I'd scrutinize those rules again and see what it says about trans options. Other than that (and the engine of course) everything is the same.

I'm ok with doing the engine and trans. I figure for SP1 I'd have to do a trans anyway, to get the short 5th and LSD. And it's always good to have a few engines around. I just didn't want to find out somewhere along the line that I have an illegal car because of some small difference in the S, since the rules say 'chassis' but don't define what that really means.

You would need to change the engine harness I think, the 16v has the separate ignitor and other small wiring / wire length differences. If the s is a decent running car I'd try to find an 8v instead and sell the s.

Ive been toying with calling on the car I think you are looking at.

I just spoke with the seller of an S almost ready for the track. motor is out and he realized he cant race it in the 944 class. Putting the motor back is probably beyond my skillset. and possibly my wife's tolerance level.

Colorado Springs craigslist in parts if anyone is interested. He was up front with the condition etc.
