I have read many posts on exhaust fumes in the cabin and have done a lot of the recommended remedies but I cannot seem to get it to go away. I have done the following:
- replaced rear hatch gasket
- replaced firewall gasket
- replaced sunroof gasket
- replaced inner and outer gearshift boots.
The smell isn't constant but I always smell it at some point when I drive the car (daily). I haven't been able to correlate the smell to any set of circumstances. Its definitely not coming in through the fresh air vent.
Any suggestions?

Have you checked the battery box to see if it's rotted and letting fumes into the cabin from the engine compartment? Also the firewall rubber grommets and seals.

I haven't fixed it yet. The roof is off 95% of the time anyways. But I'm not sure if anyone sells them new. I think the best bet might be to try used? Someone might have the foam surround still in good shape. They tend to fall apart pretty easily and make a mess.

What year is your 944? If you have a late 944 with tubular headers, they could be cracked and you would smell the fumes in the cabin (or at least I did with mine). I was also be able to smell the fumes under the hood on the exhaust side of the engine while idling at certain times.

On my 92 I had a problem with a cracked barb at the tank, the one for the return line. This leaked gas which pulled back there and also rotted the end of the return line. Easy to spot with the trunk carpet up and the cover off the fuel level sending unit access port (under some sticky matting.) Not too hard to fix either, JB weld and a new section of hose chased down after the old return line via a strong line.
I am not sure what year car you have but maybe a late 944NA as per the wheels and bumper so yours should be more or less the same.
-Joel.
