Odurandina do you do your own work or take it into a shop? Those prices are accurate... if you take your 944 to the dealership every time it needs something. The belts, wp, and tools needed can all be had for < $500, without even hunting for deals. Maybe even < $250 if you're really on the hunt. It's not a terrible DIY job and can be done in an afternoon.

Then again, I'm the clot who overtensioned his belt and had to throw $600 at a Porsche shop to make things right because I had to drive across TX the next day. STILL less than $900 total for me.

So the good news is the balance shafts turn without interference AND it looks like the t-belt did not skip any teeth. More data when I get it apart.

stuff I don't do: timing/serpentine-related, head-gaskets, clutch.

everything else, I can pretty much handle and do myself 90% of the time, unless i'm far from home for an extended period and something starts clanking.

I average 28 k miles each year, mostly done very far from home.

this week: Indianapolis to Manasquan, NJ and back to Indianapolis.

If I attempted to learn the stuff you guys do,

after tearing out my hair, I would have a disaster and be stranded.

I posted the link. I don't know why it won't show the pic. Bottom line is one of the rollers came undone. It appears as though the balance shaft belt around itself under the t-belt and speed the engine. The fact that the balance shafts move without issue is a strong indicator that I may have for lucky. We will see soon as I can put it on the lift and set the timing marks and see if all lines up.

All I wanted to do was get this puppy running and give someone a good deal on a running project car that they could actually drive while working out the details. Instead I get porked. I am hoping the roller is seized because of it isn't that means like an idiot I didn't torque it :'( Either way the result is the same - more $'s, more lost time, less time to work on my cars. Doesn't look like I'll be driving the shark before spring:'(

I would be clapping with my butt in joy if the only damage from this is roller and belt. Seriously.

I see a bolt just laying there. It looks like you didn't torque it to spec and it came loose.

dude, you got pretty lucky! get a new belt and roller and you can have it fixed in a few hours. that's waaaay before Spring!! (looks like you really should have replaced all rollers and pulleys.)

all things considered, i have to say congratulations! do it right the second time and you'll be fine.

Yeah I am not sure where we went wrong. I KNOW we torqued all the rollers and pulleys. Someone had been in there before us... I will inspect the roller. Not able to think about the rotation on that roller, but perhaps the bearing seized causing it to spin the bolt out? I dunno but I have no one to blame but myself.

Thank you. I will post an update soon.

BTW since I opened a can of worms for ob, here is a kick in the head. I have a Volvo 850R turbo and I run it at 18.5 PSI boost all day. So why is it a lowly Volvo can accomplish this fest when ask those 951'ers are blowing #2 rod beating and piston at 15 PSI?

I don't understand how such over engineered cars can have such weak points. Anyway I love the mystique of it all :-P

#2 is a known weakness and its a lot easier to dial boost into a motor than it is to drop the pan and replace the rod bearings as a safety measure. Guys get a car, buy a LR kit and go rage it and then pop a motor.

Its really not that bad to do the rod bearings, people just don't :\. People also do them and have a failure, its just something that can happen.

Agreed. Doing the clutch, doing the belts, pulling the turbo, pulling the engine, doing rod bearings, reclocking torsion bars..none of these things are high up on my want to do list, but all of them are 1 day jobs. Just have to buck up and get dirty.
