i don't kow danno, driving in the rain has taught me at least two things for the moment: 1. don't use the brakes as the only means of stopping power when going downhill on a tight curve with a lot of road debris (even @ >10 mph!); 2. Never attempt ANY manoeuvers with tires that should be thrown in the trash. Ooops.

now i have some front end work that will need to be done (hmmm, fresh paint!); besides from the fact that someone decided to leave me a surprise one morning, with a dent to my front left fender. these are the streets of san francisco with 'big basin' in the background, indeed. more to come by next post-turkey day pizza jaunt, for sure.

I think I get sick when I drive slow.....sick and tired of putt putt drivers.....

I love the 'G's and the feeling of throwing the car around. I have taken my mum out for rides in the country near her place (upstate NY). She Loved it. She tells her friends its like being on a roller coaster.

Some friends of mine freak out and white knuckle the door and imbedd their hands into the dash......Oh Sh*t !!! Oh my god...are you going to slow......oh jesus!!!! SH*t....!

I am going to install a video camera in both my GTI and the Porsche. Good for studying driving events and recording some of my fave drives. The next time I take someone for a ride that talks trash ahead of time....we can all get a kick out of how they really react.

Yeah, get a wide-angle lens and aim the camera sideways on the driver's side of the dash. That way can get the passenger's reactions in as well. That should make for some hilarious videos!

I took a sweeper at over twice the posted limit one and there was a seam in the road that unsettled the car a bit. That sudden motion combined with the high G's kinda gave me the feeling that my field of vision shifted a bit. Yeah, pretty weird. That was when I first got the car and had never experienced any forces like that even in pops' 911. I'm immune to g forces now and am fully ready to install the suspension components I have listed below.

Question

Hey Deni--

What are your other fav roads around SF? I just took a friend from the Mission down 101, across 92 to Half Moon Bay, up the 1 to SF. Quick, but too many people on the road, which wasn't totally dry. After driving an SUV for a while now I know why people hate them. I can't wait to have a reason to get down to Big Sur.

BTW, I'm ready for the first ding from the Streets of SF--though the worst so far was have to clean a load of bird crap off my hood. Those North Beach birds, man...

brb:

there are tons, but off the top of my head: there's a cool swath of road behind 3rd ave. which leads to the road in between kelley's mission rock (club) and pac bell stadium (heading towards the downtown); it's short but if you can get good speed (not excessive, just a lot) you can find some great gt-style curves (maybe 3) on the way. other than that, other places here in the City are scarce. mostly due to traffic and length. there are a bunch in the presidio (near GG bridge) but WATCH OUT, the cops there are federal cops and you can get in big trouble if they catch you speeding (the Presidio is still federally controlled, use radar protection if possible). other places are in the Sunset district (straight road Sunset Blvd? that goes to Stonestwon Galleria, a lot of ricers race along here, and some have died). there are others but you will have to ask me later (mrfrog@100palm.com).

the 101? there are A LOT of CHP that patrol that freeway. i would recommend the 280 - way better, especially going to s. cruz/monterey/big sur! plus the average speed + quantity of people is totally faster and fewer + there are actually curves which make the drive interesting. i take it whenever possible. further down towards mtn. view on the 280, i foolishly tried to keep up with an m5. can you say "dusted"?!!

Bird **** is NOTHING. One thing you *must* have is a garage, which aren't cheap (sounds like you are in N. Beach)!!! If not, your paint job & body will suffer, GUARRANTEED, no joke (you are forewarned). this is due to people parking very close and not caring if they "bump" into your bumper or scrape either the passenger or driver's side door. Don't chance it! Look around in Chinatown and how cars look - pay close attention to the bumper area. you will see.

on the topic of north beach, check out grant ave. there is a white, what looks like a 944 S (?), that's always parked there (near green st.). what's your take? dig the hanger wire holding up the front bumper, underneath the front plate? hehe

Deni--

Actually, I'm on Turk out by USF, where it's wide, mellow, and you can always find parking. I am keeping my eyes open for a garage (to have work space as much as protection), but I'm risking it for now ($2900 investment not too scary). I was just in North Beach this noon chillin with my friend, going to City Lights, people watching etc. after the spin. Totally agree on 280--I just took 101 out of the Mission. I'll keep eyes open for that white one in N. Beach next time I'm there.

Salud!

Earlier today I took a spin out on 35 just south of 92... it was a little wet but there are very few cars and like an hours worth of twisties =) Sometimes you get unlucky and get stuck behind some van or something but I see a lot of people really moving around those 20 mph turns... I did about 70 the whole way.. woulda been faster if it wasn't for the rain.

Deni--

I'll try to make it. Should be fun as hell to watch, but since my 944 is transportation to work I don't think I'm ever going to compete with it. Would be good to meet--will follow your posts. Thanks for the link to PCA GGR!

autocross really doesnt put wear and tear on your car. Hell, I abuse my car more on exit ramps commuting to work everyday.

You might like it.

well, i'm not going to compete either. i want to make sure that at least the car is tuned (suspension-wise) - i don't prefer the way the car is set up now (100% stock). furthermore, i know that it ain't gonna happen just yet, so i am going primarily to talk to other enthusiasts (like you guys) have a good time/help with cones/watch people spin out, sometimes break down, and cheer others on.

btw - there is a guy (Mike Mitchell) who is selling most of the equipment off of his extremely modified 87 951. this thing had fiberglass hood/side fenders/doors, full roll cage setup, etc., running 275 17s with fikse fm10 wheels, etc. check out the link: Racing and High Performance Parts for Sale, (look for Jan 2 half way down) seems he wants to drive 911s instead of 951s. who knows how much is left.

Static electric load can do funny things.
Hook up a small chain from the chassis, just touching the road and try again. Make sure it conducts...
The chain will ground the car and the static load will disappear.
Also opening a window will help sometimes.
Take care
