A friend of mine and I both have 1985 951's. *edit 1986 edit* His sunroof doesn't work and we finally got around to troubleshooting it. The PO hacked all kinds of stupid stuff up on his car and mentioned that he "tried to fix it" himself once. <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> We noticed that he's missing a microswitch and a lot of his wiring is all disconnected, so we tore my car apart to compare wiring and stuff. Turns out that my car has a completely different sunroof mechanism than his. After doing a little research, I noticed that Porsche changed the whole set-up halfway through 1986 and my car has the earlier set up and his has the later version.
I hear lots of people complain that their plastic sunroof gears strip, and my earlier set up just uses one metal gear.
So the question is: What's so good about the post-1986 version of the sunroof mechanism? Should I be jealous of my friend since mine is the earlier one? (I'm not jealous yet, at least mine works...)

The model year change at the factory seems to be just after the summer holidays, so model '86 can be produced from september onwards.
Mine is probably built in '85 (late in the year though) looking at the date stamp on some parts (tranny), body number and registration are '86.
The sunroof system might have been changed for the sake of cost. Installing the old style probably took more time.
If your frend is missing the switch "up at the roof", than dont bother, I know from this list that some have it jumped and operate it (with some more care) to full satisfaction.
The switches in the back can be obtained from any Radio shack like store, they are standard.
The write-up from 944garage, Pelicanparts (and a lot of others) covers the new style sunroof, so he should be covered.
Take care

On the serios side, Luke is correct. On the no-so-serious side, since when do the Porsche gods need a reason to change something that works into something that doesn't. Maybe the old system wasn't making them enough money on repair/replacement parts......
Porsche quality....stops above the drivetrain...

Danno... I have an '84..an "old timer". Still has the replacable ball joints. But, you are right..another non replacable replacable part <G>
I dunno..if we weren't such a bunch of "fanatics", I wonder what we would think of the build quality if we didn't know it was a "Porsche"?
Just wondering....
Cheers!

[quote] the metal gear style is NOT servicable <hr></blockquote>
The wind screen wiper motors arnt either..
This according to the manual.
Reality is often different.
But on the other hand: mine did not need any service in the last 16 years...
Take care
