Gearbox rattle at idle
After a short drive, or a long one, while idling i can clearly hear a rattle coming from the back end of the car.
Its clearly wear related and i expect some worn parts should be replaced...just dont know where to look inside the gearbox.
Do you guys refresh your gearboxes and diffs when worn?

It's more likely worn torque tube bearings than the gearbox. My old torque tube also rattled at idle .When you press the clutch in the rattle goes away ,right?

is there any easy way to check which one is the cause without massive amounts of work?

I have same the same going on, but it's not always very prevalent. Also suspect the torque tube. Can everyone else hear their torque tube spinning.... especially after letting off the gas while cruising in gear? I also have no sound deadening.

Volhv, I can hear it. It's faint, I can only hear with the fans and music off, and not always. When I first got the car, I heard bearing noises and it was pretty unnerving. After a short time everything quieted down. God loves me? Anyways, unless it gets loud you can probably just keep going. I've been driving it for a year daily with the same very minor sound.

My torque tube was clearly audible in my stripped 84. You'd be surprised how much the factory damping kills all the random noises from the the car so you dont hear them. It really comes through without it.

Yes, same here. No sound deadening either, and I can hear mine.
Unlike you, Morghen, I wish it WAS my transaxle! Easier to swap that, and then I would put in an LSD unit...
TT bearings are in my future. *sigh*. Getting a torque tube out is not pretty, but I have to do it eventually.

I also have a rattle at idle, I made a post about it a year or two ago but after putting up the video I didn't get any more feedback.
Anyway, mine will go away if I move the shift lever towards a gear without putting it all the way in gear. Any idea why that would be? Torque tube related still?
Sorry for the slight tangent.

Simply...hmmmm.
Replacing the bearings is the least of my worries. What I don't look forward to is the act of getting the TT out and back in, I've done it, can't say I liked it much.
Once out, I'd rather renew the bearings than put in another tube with unknown bearing life ahead of me. And have to do it again.

This winter or next spring i have to replace the clutch as its really old so i'll do the whole thing in one move.
Replace clutch, TT bearings and check on the gearbox diff as i get some raging sounds while rpms are too low in 1st and 2nd gear...but these might also be related to the TT bearings developing play.
So nobody found rattles/problems with these gearboxes? i broke a 944 NA gearbox with this same engine.
Was going up a hill in third and floored it. I heard a sound similar to that when you take a grinder to a metal part. The crown wheel of the diff grinded away into the satelite wheels. I drove the car home on the remaining bits of the diff
I'm afraid not to destroy the 16S gearbox like that.
