I would venture to say New Zealand doesn't have very many at all, might be better to get one in Australia and ship it over. I bet shipping from the UK to NZ is very costly, London to Cape Town is 7,069 mi. and from Cape Town to Wellington NZ roughly 9,500, that is about 16,520 to ship freight your car and that is pretty big $$$$ or pounds.

There are a couple things to consider. Are you going to take it back with you in a couple years? So now double the cost. Are you bringing a lot of household gear with you? Then you got to figure the cost difference in a 20 foot or 40 foot container. Otherwise a 20 footer.

Then what are the import fees for a car that you already have owned for a few years?

I looked into this from US to Hong Kong once and conclusion was forget all about it when you are dealing with a car that isn't pretty expensive. You will spend a good portion of the car's worth on shipping.

I've seen them as low as 20KNZ (about 10K US) and as high as 45k, a 968 goes for about 42k here, I paid 14k for my 85 944, they are rare and special cars here.
With all the speed cameras here it is not as much fun having a fast car as it used to be, in the UK they will often let you go at 80mph, here they stop everyone doing over 110Kph (70Mph).
Bring it over and I'll buy it off you to save you shipping it back :-)

your best bet would prolly be to pick one up in Australia. You can check www.tradingpost.com.au or carpoint to get some prices. I bought mine in the US cause the prices looked better than OZ but I have since put an additional $16K mostly in parts and some in labour, into the car. So that has worked out more expensive than buying one in Australia. It will cost me about $2500 USD to ship my 944T back to OZ when I return.

Be aware that they can and do hold it in customs for a week or two, also it would take a while to get here. Once here it would have to be fully inspected by the MOT, they tend to make you rep-lace all the rubber brake lines and things like that just for the hell of it. The Camera and cop situation is pretty bad, also the roads are not as good as the U.K.
Where do you plan on going?

I live in Australia and I should warn you that even in Australia turbos are uncommon. If you came to any city (Sydney is your best bet) in Australia at any one week you might find only one or two for sale and prices ranging from A$18,000 to A$45,000 and you obviously aren't guaranteed that the one car will be any good.

There was a month when I was looking at them that there were only 2 or 3 for sale in Australia and none of them were in Sydney.

So you don't have it like in America where you can see a few turbos and pick the one you like.

Theres a few 944 turbo's fro sale in New Zealand as Martin mentioned prices vary like in the UK
an example PORSCHE 944 Turbo 1986 leather interior $28,000 (say 9,000 pound or US$14,000)
To run in it NZ you can put up a bond and using the carnat system used in UK you can use here - if you don't export it tyou lose the bond - normally what hey think duty costs are.
To register it here you nee to go through a compliance inspection can cost up to NZ$3000 per car.
Car needs to be cleaned, seat belts are normally required to be changed an dsundry bits like brake lines etc.

if you go to the following site and ask someone from it for advice http://www.porsche.org.nz

Thanks for the additional info very useful .. im in two minds on the one shoulder i have the devil saying sell your 944 buy a 951 then take it with you in a box when (and if) you goto NZ enoying the BHP. Chances are says the devil you can sell it over there and maybe even make some cash ! Then the angel quips keep you 944 NA its totally mint and then sell it when you go over cos moneys alot more shippable than a car ...

Ahh who am i kidding the wife will make the decision for me no doubt
