Question Distributor cap - should it be a little loose?

My distributor cap seems to be in place properly (damned screw/clamp things suck) but it "wiggles" just a little if I grab it and twist CW/CCW.

Should this happen?

It shouldn't wiggle. If it does, its probably because the rubber gasket is no longer keeping it secure (mine has a noticeable indent around it where the cap touches it). I just picked up a replacement gasket for mine today at the dealer ($2.50 - but it had to be ordered). It comes with sticking backing on it to secure it to the cam housing

Definately should NOT wiggle. My shop showed me the difference between how I had it fitted and fully tightened. Very noticeable. In my experience, it's those nasty upper and lower screws. There is a fairly detailed procedure on the 944 garage web site, though I have followed it and still didn't get it right.

Tom: My gasket is compressed a lot, but looks like regular gasket material and not rubber.

PK: I suspected it was my alignment of the screws - they really s**k. What's the 944 garage site's URL? (tried www.944garage and 944_garage to no avail).

Tnx guys.

Wink

Usually the rotor cap wiggles when the lower screw is not fastened as it should be.Be sure that the lower screw is tightened correctly.

The gasket I got is the same as my original. It's light gray rubber with sticky backing. I'm replacing it tomorrow. My cap has a little play in it now, so this should help.

Skip: Thanks. Got the 944 garage site in my favorite links now.

Funny, I figured this out empirically (trial and error). The Porsche manual isn't really clear...or maybe I didn't believe what they wrote.

To install, turn...
bottom screw CCW 270deg
top screw CCW 90deg

If you try to "cheat" and go the "short way" by trying to turn the bottom screw CW 90deg, apparently the U-shaped thingy is assymetric and the one side taller (acts as a stop) than the other and the tip won't get past it.

BTW, one thing missing from the 944 Garage directions is that the cap is not symmetric - it has a top and a bottom (keyed to the dust shield). Hmmm...maybe nobody uses that shield and therefore nobody cares?

Jeepers - you'd think this was rocket science or somethin'
