Default Check this out... My timing belt rubbing, lost a 3rd its width!!!

This isn't necessarily a thread asking for help but more like something crazy I figured I'd share. Feel free to speculate on what might be causing this as I check out the car. Actually, more like as my dad checks out the car, as I am in final stages of packing for college.

This is perfectly bad timing for me... (No pun intended.) I am leaving to drive 6hrs into NM for college tomorrow morning at 6am and this morning was supposed to be my final simple maintenance day. Oil change, OPRV re sealing, and timing cover install and checking belt tension.

I did a timing belt, all front seals, oil pan gasket, and rod bearings in March, and left the top belt cover off so I could inspect it in times like today. I had noticed some belt shavings over the months but thought it was a normal break-in type thing. Didn't realize the entire timing belt was shredding off.

Update as I type up the thread... Looks like the belt is being forced towards the block and shredding on the back belt cover. First thing we're checking is maybe I installed the timing tensioner backwards with the flange out.

This pic is me holding a new timing belt next to the one in the car...

wtf?

but you did the rod bearings (944/968 lower engine work category) and it didn't blow up.

i'm seriously impressed.

Yeah, WTF is right...

UPDATE: Is there supposed to be some sort of washer behind the timing belt tensioner??? My tensioner is positioned correctly, see picture.

Also. I believe I used a late car roller kit in my 83. Are the later belt tensioners different?? Ex, deeper behind the flange in the rear?

Looks like adding a washer behind the tensioner will fix my problem, but I'll never know.

What's more impressive is that the car is still running strong after driving on this for 5 months, and driving real hard at times.

Update... We're thinking the rollers and belt are all on correctly but the problem is in the rear belt cover being not fitted properly or something.

The belt should be relatively centered on all of the pulley gears. On my S2, there is a washer behind the crank pulley for the timing belt, which bumps out the pulley and allows the timing belt to align correctly. I'm not sure if the early cars used the washer, but I don't see why they shouldn't, so you might want to search the forums.

I redid the entire crank seal/oring/pully assembly and I am positive everything is correct on it!

My tensioner has a lot of thread after the nut (see pic) so I'm going to first figure out where on the rear cover it's rubbing, then add a washer behind the tensioner.

Sausagehacker what's up with urs?

Is the rear timing belt cover secured by the proper length bolt so it does flop around and move forward? Grab the bottom of the timing cover and see if it is possible to push and pull.

imagine if you'd checked under the cover after the thing let go only to discover a sliver left.

Glad I found it when I did!

The covers seem sturdy but who knows. My dad is currently tearing the front end apart! I think the rear cover is warped or something. Maybe it wasn't seated correctly, who knows. Either way, we're just gonna reinstall with a new belt and NO BELT COVERS, BIAAATCH!

Update, with lots of pictures.

Pics before we pulled the belt.

You can see the rub point:

ah I feel you guys. I'm also going back to school (5 hour drive) and i'm still finishing my rod bearing replacement and while doing that i found out my new water pump I installed couple weeks ago has a leak.....not sure yet if it's from the gasket or the actual pump. kind of pissed.
