Unhappy OK, is there any alternative to replacing a leaking steering rack?

Hi y'all. As you all recall, my 951 has developed a leak in the steering rack and I'm wondering if there's anything short of replacement I can do. Any way I can just replace the seals or something?
And yes, even though I knew it was a poor, lame, and stupid idea, I already tried leak stop (Lucas). Slowed it but did not cure it. Sigh.

I am just trying to exhaust alternatives that may exist before doing the nasty. If I could pop on a couple of 6.00 seals and be done, by God I'd do it. Otherwise, I'll do what's necessary..

Cheers

Unfortunately, I have never heard of people being able to fix this without buying a rebuilt rack. $800

There was one guy on rennlist a while back who tried to get the parts to fix it, but could not. He became very profane after a while.

I do not know of any way to replace the seals on the rack, for the home mechanic.

However, ZF used to rebuild steering racks originally sold by them (such as the 944 racks). I'm not sure if you can still do this.

I'd recommend checking by any shop that works with 'World Parts' (a leading supplier of new/rebuilt parts to businesses for more than a few german nanufacturers, such as bosch, ***, etc).

Hope this helps,
Ahmet

Thumbs down

Although I've only dealt with Vertex a few times, I couldn't recommend them to anybody.

They have good prices, but I think they're cutting corners to get them. They often have problems with their suppliers, etc. I've ordered rotors that had varying thickness, and stainless steel brake lines that arrived about 3 months too late! (I decided to order the lines from automotion, so I could get the car going again, but also because I couldn't trust their safety after the rotors).

Never buy parts from Vertex auto unless they are new and they come from a reputable manufacturer. All of their rebuilt parts are crap.

If I were you I would invest in the ZF rebuilt unit ($800).

Cool

I got a rebuild/reseal kit(no boots or bushings)from http://www.kaufmanproducts.com/
I talked to a guy there named tom.

The kit was 50.00 + 13.00 cod shipping.

it was pretty easy to do.

If you go this way e-mail me with any questions,

Later,
Rob

The rack manufacturer (ZF) does not approve of rebuilding by anybody besides their own technicians. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with you doing this, just passing info. (I'm sure there's a chanse that the kit is manufactured by ZF itself!)
