Default Clutch noise 87 924s

Been running the car after extensive repairs after a 10-year sitting and now I have a clutch noise. What I have read the clutch has a rubber "not sure what part is rubber", but it is suppose to take up the shock while shifting.

Symptoms:

When dropping the clutch I get a light bang and a shudder when taking foot off of the gas. If I slowly let the clutch out the noise is not present. The shudder is also present when in lower gear when taking the foot off the gas the shudder can be felt. I checked the drive train mounts MM are new and suspension bushings are good.

I do not think the two are related but under harder acceleration I get a slight shudder seems to be timing or fuel related. All the fuel and ignition part are new. I never went into the Barn door nor replaced the Ox sensor, could this also be clutch related?

Looking at all the other rubber related parts it is safe to assume that this must also be comprised. If this is the case is this just an annoyance or will cause other damage?

There' an inspection hole under the car (driver's side ) on the bell housing that you can put your finger in. If you fell rubber chunks or if your finger is covered in rubber dust, you've likely lost the rubber centered clutch plate. You can replace it with the same or as some of us have done, replace it with a conventional spring loaded disc. If you do, you can expect a little buzz to be telegraphed up into the shifter.

I put the conventional Sachs clutch package with the spring loaded disc in my car plus the short shifter from "online944.com" and I love the combination. Positive, short shift throws.

It sounds like you are hitting the "limp home" tabs. If you are not easy on things they will sheer and leave you stranded. The rubber part is in plce of the springs in a traditional clutch.

Broken rubber:

Thanks for the picture this job looks like a pain. I was given this car and ready to get rid of it a shame a lot of time and money has gone into this. I have 2 928s a 68 vett and other cars I really don't need this project. I will take a step back and see what I may want to do. Needs a compressor and a few other minor things 48k miles just sat for too long.

Is a little time consuming if you are new to the cars, but it isn't complicated. I did it by myself using jack stands and simple hand tools.

I have a lift but not a transmission jack, not new to cars or the 928 done two clutches in the past. This 924 looks like it is more involved then the 928.

No trans jack needed. If you have a helper its easy to lift and lower the transmission with a standard floor jack. You just need a hand on each side to keep it balanced on the pad.

With a competent helper, I was able to get my torque tube out in something like 30min. (Again, on jack stands)

The worst part of the clutch is the speed/reference sensors and one of the bell housing bolts. There isn't much clearance with the firewall. I ended up grinding down a cheap spare 19mm socket to get the bolt out. Worked like a charm.

You are doing a good job of talking me into doing this, the car runs pretty good but got used to the 928 and one has a super charger so like going backwards.
Any good write ups on this with pictures?

Wow, that is a fantastic write up. Scrolling through it was like reliving the job light down to stripping the threaded rod pulling the tt bearings. I greased the threads to prevent it on attempt # 2.
