Default Finally bought a 944... 2000 mile drive home

Well, I did it finally. 1983 Guards Red, Fuchs, 5-speed. Purchased from jharding (he's on here somewhere...) and I love it!

Already lost a DME relay... that was fun. Had the flatbed pull me out of the on-ramp I was so close to buying one before I flew up, but never ended up doing it. "Nah, it'll be fine." (see avatar)

Anyway, jharding and admiralkhole have been awesome resources- thanks so much guys. I already feel like a member of this awesome community!

Welcome to the "herd". Looks like a nice car. I bought mine (3 rd) in Santa Fe and fearlessly drove it to SW Florida.

Welcome, and even though your avatar is really funny, update it soon. You will scare away the other newbies!

Yes sir!

I'm trying to upload a picture or two (it really is spectacular compared to a lot of 944s I've seen driving around) but my phone's internet via tethering is the limiting factor...

I thought you pirated my picture when I saw your avatar! Somewhere there's a "944's on rollbacks" thread

Update on the trip, and I'm afraid it's not good news. Cooling system stopped working when I got caught in NYC rush hour traffic (thanks a lot you good-for-nothing GPS) and I had to pull off the road. Thermostat, cooling fan and fan switch are all done.

I am seriously stressed out. My uncle drove 2 hours out to get me while my car is at a shop that I really don't trust 100%. In hindsight it was a mistake to take it there, but I didn't really have an option. I have no way of getting the parts or installing them correctly so... goodbye $800.

See you guys on the other side.

Where in NY are you?

If you need a hand, let me know...if nothing else I can suggest a reputable shop just over the river in NJ.

ROCS who is a sponsor here is about 10mins outside NYC....and they are great guys !
best

I broke down just over the GW bridge in Ft. Lee.... she's at a shop that initially seemed ok but I'm getting a little sketched out. Coolant threw up everywhere (as though a radiator hose blew) but I couldn't find any loose ends when I looked the other day.

The shop's explanation was that the coolant was dumped out of the overflow/pressure relief valve. I'm kind of sketched out by that "explanation" because the car wasn't even close to overheating when the puking happened. About 10 minutes prior, I had topped off the coolant reservoir with distilled water when I noticed it was low (kind of overheating a little earlier...)

I'm 99% sure no permanent damage was done to the block or head. I got off the road ASAP when I noticed the temp climbing, but in NYC rush hour traffic... ASAP turned out to be like 10 mins with the needle hovering in the yellow (on early cars that's bad).

you are only about 15mins from Belleville.

If I were you, I'd call ROCS (ask for Rich or Vic...they are the owners) and tell them what happened.

You can also PM Rich on here...look on the sponsors page...they have worked on my 944's for over 10 years...Vic owns an S2 that used to be Rich's....

They also service several folks here in RL including at least one Mod.

They are straight shooters and do great work....if nothing else they can probably give you some advice!

Also...you're only about 25 mins from me....so if you find yourself in a bind, shout.
