944Fest (aka Dan P)

Wow, what a great event put on by the NOR PCA and Steinel's Autowerks in Twinsburg, OH! There were tech chats that varied from welding, brakes, oil changes, turbos, wheel bearings, to upgrades. Several neat displays (see pics), grub and prizes. There were over 100 enthusiasts present, and lots of 944 guys. The only rennlister I picked out was Judd. Nice guy, poor kid has got an expensive toy. I told a lot of non rennlisters about the best source for P-car info on the web, and made some waterpumper local contacts for 944Fest '02 (Sunday, July 7th). Here's a few digipics I snapped at the event.

Here's the "how you change the oil in a boxter" tech. They then removed the access panels and revealed the hidden boxter engine.


Here is Matt (Wild Man) doing the brake chat. (Worth noting, the torque on the wheel bearing adjustment nut is 13ft/lb. Knowing that in the quiz won me a bottle of wine)

How about a couple of pics of a 951, air cleaner to exhaust, with everything else out of the way? Man, would it be nice to work on it this way?!? If anyone wants higer quality images of these, e-mail me and I'll send them to you. I downgraded the quality to help loading. I should have shrunk the size while I was at it, sorry.

Though...I've said it once, I'll say it again...that is the goofiest way to plumb a car for a turbo.

Great pics Dan! Yes my toy has become expensive but I got to drive it on Sunday morning and it is worth all the money I have spent on it. I plan to spend the rest of my money on it to make it look new. It was going to be my daily driver but now I hope to use it only on nice days.

Thanks for asking about the FEST..it allows me to throw out another plug for it. Here is the scoop. I've got several friends who have 944s, and I enjoy meeting other folks who have them too. We often get together to do track events, but never really get together in a group to just go out and cruise and turn some heads. So, 944Fest was born. Last summer, before our NOR PCA drivers school, on a thurs eve we all got together and had a cruise, cookout, photo shoot and tech session. We gathered in North Ridgeville, Ohio, on Cleveland's west side, and went out on a predetermined cruise trip with a "scout" out ahead with a cell phone for cop reports. You should have seen the heads turn as a dozen 944s rolled by. We stopped at the airport for the pic you see on the webpage and in the park for some other shots. Afterwards, we grilled up some steaks and enjoyed free deserts from the sponsoring Dairy Queen, not to mention some ice cold beers. We had 12 cars in all (not everyone made it to the photo shoot) but I was happy with the turnout for a thurs eve. This year I'm moving it to a Sunday afternoon, in the hope of bringing in some more participants. My goal this year is 20 cars. Do you want to be one of them? Let me know!

I believe earlier in the 931/951 development cycle the Turbo was on the right side of the engine. If I recall correctly they relocated it to the left side to increase reliability.

I had my second car pre-purchased inspected at Steinel's Autowerks in Twinsburg. They do some pretty good work but man are they sure expensive!! Ouch! From the photos that sure doesn't look like their shop, so where were the photos taking? 944 fest looks like alot of fun. I'm near Toledo Ohio gonna have to think about making the next one.

If you think Steinel's is expencive, try Fred Bakers. THEY SUCK!!!!

EDIT - Fred Baker Porsche Audi sucks, not Steinel's. I have only good things to say about Steinel's.

First of all, half of there service writers are clueless. Second, if you drive in with anything less than a 951 or 968 that they know, you are a back burner customer to them and they through there apprentice mechanics on it. And third, their race cars come first.

Let me give you an example:

I took my 924S to them to get the clutch replaced and have the car looked over. In the process they claim I need a new cap, rotor and wires. These were in fact all new. The rotor even had the date and mileage writen on it with a sharpie marker. They claimed my wires did not have enough resistance. Well, this is because Magnacor wire DO have less resistance than the stock wires because they do not rely on built in resistors in the ends to suppress EMI and RFI.

While they were at it, they replaced the oil seal at the front of the cam box. It started leaking again a couple months later at most.

Example two:

Not having learned my lesson, I took the car back to them to have them replace the timing belt, water pump and whatever front end seals and rollers need replacing. The service writer, some young punk *** I think named Andrew (there is another guy there who has been there for a while named Andy or Andrew who is actually very nice), wrote up the estimate from the book to R&R the water pump (which includes R&R of the t-belt), PLUS R&R the T-belt, and another book estimate to replace the seals, which also includes R&R of the T-belt. The estimate was way over $2000.00 to which I said BULLSH*T. I told the punk to rewrite the estimate as a waterpump replacement including a new belt in the process and re-figure the seal replacement so that the t-belt R&R was not part of the estimate (I'm not paying them to R&R the t-belt three times). This concept went WAY over his head, but he finally got the dollars down some. So I figured, go ahead and do the work. Now bear in mind that I dropped the car off on a Wednesday and they told me they would have the quote to me by Friday and work done on Monday. I didn't get the original quote until Monday and now the work was to be done by the next Friday. This was then revised to the Friday two weeks later, because they had a bunch of race cars come in that had to be worked on first and their 924/44 "expert" was in training in Atlanta for a week. I wonder what expert they had working on all of the watercooled race cars?

Needless to say, I did not have them do the work. Do also bear in mind that I was told a lot of bad thinks about Baker's when I moved here, but thought naw, they can't be that bad. Boy was I mistaken!
