Got an e-mail on that car.. someone in Cincinnati bought it. I have tried to get a response from him. Seems to be a pretty cool car, and I think it went for $8500? We shall see.

Hello all.

Project 944 is complete. The last issue detailing the work done will be released in December.

I am an avid reader of both GRM the magazine and message boards. I was lucky enough to check the boards at just the right time and contact JG first. It also helped that I was tentatively looking for a car when it became available also.

That said, I have yet to receive the car. JG will be leaving home office in Ormond Beach, FL on Friday, Sept 14 and arrive at my house the following day. I wanted an earlier delivery date but he had a pesky vacation planned.

I promise to fill you all in on the car after I receive it. Any of you near Cincy are more than welcome to check out the car. I will be driving between Middletown and Milford each and every day. I also plan on doing all of my own wrenching and will most likely need help on some specifics of the car seeing as how I am new to the Porsche family. I look forward to getting to know many of you (online and in person) and hope that I will become an active member in yet another car community.

Oh yeah, the final price including delivery that JG and I settled on was $6725. I thought that was quite a bargain, considering that to build an identical car, it would cost me more in part costs alone. They have well over $10,000 in parts on the car, not including labor.

so then, what became of all the "we're going to join PCA, POC and whatnot and develop a 944 racer", etc., etc.?

Oh well...

That was my first thought also... maybe they found out how much it costs to maintain it as a race car though, they still have two more Porsche projects running. A 914, and an early 911.

BTW, Firestarter... great find, awesome price. CONGRATS!!! What do YOU plan to do with it? It's got most of the stuff needed for autocross, or even a great club race starter.

I thought the deal was just too good to pass up.

My main usage for the car will be a daily driver. I will run it in an occasional auto-x. I don't think club racing is in my near future, as much as I would like to do it, I feel that you just shouldn't drive your race car to the track. Of course, my opinions and outlook is constantly changing. I will keep you all posted as things change.

Just noticed your response in the age/car thread. Please forgive my ignorance, but is there a source that anyone can point me to to aid me in determining if it is truly a "Euro spec" car? I too was curious about that statement when I read it in the magazine, but trusted JG. I have the VIN would it be possible to decode from there?

THX,

You can call PCNA (Porsche Cars of North America) with the VIN and they should be able to tell you all about it... or, get a CarFax rundown on the VIN history.

Good Luck!

Found a VIN decoder site for the 944 (http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/3322/spec.htm)

Anyway the result is: WPO ZZZ 94 Z K N 4 00001-99999 Rest of World

The car is a euro spec. My vin has the ZZZ designation. This car is getting better by the minute. Woohoo! Although in the second article on Project 944, the rwhp was only around 140 bhp. I will give you all an update on Monday when I have had time to check my mags.

Porsche measures (as do most/all car makers) bhp at the crank, right. Bearing that in mind, the 140 rwhp sounds about right for a car that old. That car would have had about 158 at the crank new, right. Factor in a 20 to 25% loss through the driveline and you are pretty close if not under 140, more like 120 at the wheels.

Let us know how those Ledas hold up to the weather as I daily drive my 924S here in Cleveland. I know we get more snow and we have the salt mines under the lake so I am sure we use more salt.

Thumbs up

Good point manning. I checked the August issue for their baseline numbers. 128 rwhp. As you stated their are driveline losses associated with any drivetrain. I thought it was closer to 10-15% for rwd and 20-25% for fwd. For the record, 25% less of 165 bhp is 123.75 rwhp. This figure is right on with what it pulled on the dyno.

Will do on the Ledas. I wouldn't expect much problem though as they are an all aluminum body. I will be driving the car daily for my 36 mi commute each way. While we don't get nearly as much snow down here, it seems that every day in the winter they salt the roads "just in case". Sad really.

Wait intil Mt. Adams hills are covered in snow! Try and get that baby up there! I do, most of the time, or else it is a pretty cold walk! (I work up there)

I did not notice much of any corrosion on my car during the rebiuild, and it has seen 3 full winters. Hope it stays that way, although I wash it top to bottom weekly in the winter. Pressure washers are a must have!
