Default About to fix my AC, need advice.

Last year when my AC went out I just lived with it. Have decided I am going to fix it before I leave for Fort Knox July 12th.

Has anyone purchased a rebuilt compressor from Ebay they could recommend?

Also, seems as though I read somewhere about someone using a different AC compressor that was smaller and cheaper to get rebuilt. No I am not thinking of the alternator, though as soon as mine goes out I am doing the Nissan swap on it.

I have a condensor thats in better shape than what I have already, plan to swap them out and put on a new drier and rebuilt compressor, the clutch on mine is fried.

Anyway any advice much appreciated.

I used the Ebay Rebuilt compressor. They seem to work pretty good. Make sure to put the correct oil in and you should be fine.

Do you recall which vendor you used?

Keep us updated on your project. I tried to fix mine last year. I failed for a couple of reasons. May try and pick it up again in a year or two (too busy to take it on, this year).

It would be especially helpful to learn how your compressor works out.

This is a good time to convert back R12 all day every day. So much more effective than the conversion. The only way the conversion works nearly as well is getting a bigger condenser up front.

You can't beat physics.

That is my thread from last year.

CoolZoneACParts on Ebay. They include the dryer and the expansion valve. If you don't find one listed just message them through ebay. They may need cores. I know they sold out last year. I know quite a few guys on rennlist have used their rebuilt compressors.

F40LM, did you ever puchase a rebuilt compressor?

I started going down the "rebuilt" compressor path about 6 years ago. Removed the one on the car and put on the first rebuilt with new drier and charged system. Couple months later, it started leaking from the front shaft seal. Vendor sent out a replacement [at no charge] which resulted in another install and charge. A few months later, the nose/clutch bearing let go, which allowed the pulley to wobble, and threw the accessory [alternator] belt. I put on a non-operational, but "functional", compressor to run the alt belt and left town on remote assignment.

Got back to it last year and decided to do it right...purchased a new Nippondenso 10P15E compressor from Zim's for $525. After replacing a few old leaking o-rings [detected with UV dye], the system has held pressure for 8 months, is very cold, and I haven't looked back.

IMHO, new is the way to go...I would've saved over $1000 [initial intall, servicing, charging, replacement install, re-servicing, re-charging, functional install].

I can tell you one really annoying thing about my 968.... with the belt interval now being longer, I can do the belts, rollers, and H20 pump when the H20 pump begins leaking.... problem is, at that moment, you might as well do the ac compressor too..... with 2 compressors having lasted 78 k and 79 k miles, when my second seized last summer, I realized I could have sent it out for a rebuild, but I simply deleted it instead. I would have welcomed it during may in Florida, but, so far, I've barely missed it.

but, it just got hot, and the drive home isn't good.

Going new is always the best way, but not the most cost effective. I have been happy with my compressor. I really wish I would have upgraded my condenser to one that is meant for r134. That would have been a great time to do the upgrade. Dead stop in traffic the air just doesn't get as cool as on the highway. V2 Rocket was seeking a straight through condenser but I haven't seen him on the list much.

In my AC adventures in an electric 944 I've found that the cooling fan (usually ignored when dealing with AC) is VERY important.

If your fan is tired/dirty/damaged it isn't going to let the system work effectively.

If you want to "upgrade" your AC and have it blow colder, upgrade the cooling fan, the more heat you can get out at the condenser the colder the air blowing into the cabin.

**All of this assumes the rest of your AC system is working properly, it obviously won't fix a different problem.
