Post Leaking Steering Rack

My recently purchased '87 924s has pretty bad steering fluid leakage. I would like to find a source for a new or re-manufactured rack to replace it.

The boots are torn so I believe I will need more than just the rack unless boots come along.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Also, thanks to the experts on this forum who have been so helpful.

Rack failure is common.

Paragon Products, Pelican Parts, Virtex (maybe) would be a good place to start.

I would reccomend that you get a rebuilt rack, tire rod end assemblies and tie rods, and new boots. Well worth it since you need to pull it all anyway.

There are no rebuild kits to do it yourself.

Total cost should be about $425

There is a rebuild kit, I had the web site on my laptop but the hard drive died. I think there was a post here about two months ago that listed it.

The power steering rack that came in the 944/968 series of cars was manuafactured my ZF. If you buy a rebuilt unit from ZF, it will be updated to the latest design (they were continuously updated along their 11 year life). Unfortunately they cost $900, but quite possibly worth it.

I have an email at home from the guy who replaced his seals himself, describing the process. He said it cost him about $85 total.

I bought a used rack from emilysgranny (thanks, btw ) for $125 plus shipping, spent about 3 hours putting it in, had alignment done. Total cost less than $200.

This is the link to the source of the rebuilt kit for $85. I have not done this task yet, but it sounded straight forward enough. He did mention he had to fab a tool to seat the seals with.

Good luck!
