Post Injector Cleaning vs Replacement

When I checked the cam chain on my 944 S2 a couple of weeks ago, I pulled the plugs and there was a slight gas smell from #1. The engine was cold, so I assume that there had been FI leakage... could it be time for repair or replacement ?? New injectors are $78.50 each. RC Engineering (http://www.rceng.com/) has a "cleaning" service at $24 each. Recommendations anyone ?? --Roy--

Cleaning will not necessarily cure a leaking injector. I suspect you car has a few miles on it, for less than $350 you can replace them all. Probably not a concern for you but I just learned the hard way on my Turbo. I suspect one or two leaking injectors caused a poor mixture and resulted in a blown headgasket. May have been avoidable had I replaced them immediately.

I would like to remove my plugs to check for an injection leak. I know this may sound dumb...but usually DO NOT work onmmy car...but, is there anything I need to know about taking our and putting back in the plugs??? Do I torque them when I put them back in??? And if so, at what weight.
Also, how hard is it to replace injectors? Is it basically a pop out, pop in proceedure (like spark plugs), or do I need to take apart and put back together anything?
Thanks

You just need to remove the black platic cover, remove the 4 bolts holding your fuel rail, remove the clips holding each inject to the fuel rail, then just pull them out(compression fit). Just remember which way the clips for each inject go on. And have a rag handy for fuel spill.

Make sure battery is dissconnected and car is cool(safety - fire).

Good luck
Jason

Another place for rebuilds is Marren Motorsports (www.injector.com). Completely satisfied with the job they did on mine.

Get all of them done at once... both RC Engineering and Marren will flow-match the set so they are all within tolerance of each other. They supply suitable pressures to check for leaks and will not hesitate to fail one and suggest replacement. They also provide new O-rings on return and a printout of the health of your injectors.

Good Luck!

Would the rebuilder be able to tell if if the injector was leaking ? (it seems to me like they should but then again ....)

Yes, but you may want to warn them that you have one or more that is suspect.

I sent my injectors (3.2 Carrera) to Marren this spring and when I got them back one of them was DOA. (That took a while to figure out.) -Chris

This is the second complaint about the quality of Marren's service I've read recently -- I can't quite locate or recall where I read the other report of a dissatisfied customer.

I'm thinking of sending mine off to RC. Any reports outside of the positive? (I've read quite a few people saying they were happy campers dealing with RC.)

What was the outcome of this? Did they admit fault or give a reason for such a problem?

Question

OK, I am a little confused - what is the consensus: If you have a leaky injector should it be replaced or repaired?

I read over the web site for one of the injector places and I did not see any reference to fixing a leaky injector.

I would prefer to shell out the few extra hundred bucks if there is a possibility that the injector will still leak after it is repaired.

depends on where it is leaking - if it is dribbling from the tip (easy now!) then have it cleaned. If the body is leaking, replace it.
just my opinion.
