Why not leave the pulley unbelted as it helps secure the crank bolt to the oilpump?
Also, be sure to scrape/clean the old gasket gunk off of the oil cooler housing portion of the block..

PS pulley can be taken off. Threads on the crank are deep enough so that no extra washer is needed. Also, make sure you put the beveled washer on in the correct orientation.

Some progress. Always too slow for people with ADD like myself.

Crank was cross drilled, just waiting for connecting rod bolts then i hope to have all parts to finish assembly. Figure need a couple of hours to finish building it then maybe a day to reinstall and troubleshoot.
John at Blackforest racing in Denver N.C. has been great with letting me use his shop and letting me do the build but ask questions as i go along. Head is just resting on top out of the way. When the rod bolts show up i will install the pistons. More pics to follow.

Got it started yesterday. Little noisy valve lifters but ready to race once again.

The iPhone doesn't really capture the low end noise from the cars engine. Just the squeals. Nevertheless here she is…..ready to go. Valve lifters are much quieter. (Marvel Mystery Oil, was helpful). AFM is going to need a tuning. Might be running a bit lean.

Well first 944 engine i rebuilt. Seemed straight forward, although the factory shop manual isn't. 2nd motor would be much easier. Still have my new GPS speedometer to install. Can't wait to see how that thing is going to work.

Wow, great work. To me the balance shaft belt seems a bit too tight, there is that high pitched sound.

Now that is a great first post...
Welcome to the forum.
and you waited almost a year since joining to submit it?

I'm interested in the community's polarization on the topic of BS belt / Idler Pulley whine being a Porsche characteristic vs. a harbinger of component failure waiting to happen.

Anyway, please reveal your Porsche garage.. and Cheers mate.
Mike

(PS: the above post is neither a snarky flame nor a troll dropping... Peace)
