before pulling the head off. Check that everything is on it's timing mark. If your timing belt jumped. well that can be bad news.

As mentioned before check for missing teeth on the belt. It's faily common with some of the belts. Kinda hard to see since the belt just spins where the teeth are missing. Maybe have someone turn the ignition while you watch the pullies since your cover is already off.

While you have the front apart and after you've checked the that the timing marks are or are not aligned, I'd recommend doing a belt and roller (and maybe a w/p, too) replacement. Those nuts and stuff look like there's a bunch of possible corrosion in there. WYIT, right?

Got home and had a spare couple minutes. Found the OT on the top of the flywheel and it lined up with the mark on the cam. Not a great pic but lines up. Guessing a head gasket now.

It's not often this:

Is good news but it may in this case. I'm surprised all four were at zero though.

Got the head off and the valves look good to me. I don't see any marks on the pistons either. THe head gasket did have corrosion on it. Some of the passages to block the coolant were blown through or rusted away. Here are some pics. Not sure how it would give me 0 compression other than one cylinder bleeding into the other. The rings around the cylinders didn't show any signs of gasses escaping.

That's what mine looked like.

How are your bores?

Hard to tell from the pictures but some of those valves don't look like they are sealed tight. Sometimes bent valves are very slightly bent, just enough to not seal flat.

Easy was to check with the head off is to pour a liquid in the ports and see if it leaks out the valve seat. Have to do it for both intake and exhaust side obviously.

Took the head apart. Wire brushed the valves and cleaned off the head a bit. The valves are all straight. Exhaust ones were pretty heavy with build up but it eventually came off. They were seating Ok. Not great but a bit of lapping they will be fine. The head was also straight. So no real indication of an "No Running" issue.
So i took the water pump off. It was genuine Porsche and looked like it was in great shape.
Took off the timing belts/pulleys and same thing. Little corrosion on the bolts but everything was smooth.

But....

Taking a ratchet and spinning the crank seem to take more effort than i would like.
I took off the balance shaft assembly and it looks like the bearing was worn. That will need to be replaced.

So i have seen 2 issues so far. Well 3.
Cam housing gasket leaking.
Head Gasket was 99.9% worn out.
Balance shaft bearing worn.

Maybe pull the motor tomorrow and see the crank bearings. I'm thinking there is a spun one in there.

Got up to ??? no speedo.
Sorry for your issue but good video and pics for those of us learning our 944's.
How fast do you estimate you got up to? ( e.g: 4th gear @ 4000rpm)
Had you been cornering hard when failure occurred?

Today i was able to take off the exhaust headers, power steering stuff, starter....
Then went down to Harbor Freight and picked up a 1 ton hoist. 2 ton would have been better but i had a $99 coupon for it. Took about 1.5hrs to assemble the hoist. Reading the directions first would have helped out but i'm not that kind of guy.
So the clutch slave has been disconnected and the torque tube. I'm thinking i will need to take the bell housing off the back of the motor in order to get it out the top. So far i haven't really ($*%&# things up yet. I did cut a power steering line and took out the cooler. Someone want to make a donation they can have the cooler. The hose i cut isn't a special one. I will also have a pump and reservoir. One line is new. About a year ago.

As for how fast i was going....I'm sure i was well under the posted limit. Traffic and all.

Here is some eye candy...

Reading may not have helped. I recall another rennlister complaining about those instructions.

Didn't want to stop till i got the bugger out of the car. Well 10:30 ish i had it out. No toes were lost although OSHA wouldn't have liked my shoes.
Sprayed a bit of degreaser on the block. Tomorrow i think i will stick it on an engine stand and see what damage (if any) was done.
