A friend of mine just bought an S2 with a little more than 100k miles, and I don't know if I should advise him to change the clutch... Does it have a rubber center clutch like a 944?

Stock, yes. You can really feel it wind up if you try to drive off with the handbrake on. They are nice for NVH but the rubber usually fails before the clutch. Particularly if you tend to drive off with the handbrake on.

Yep, I've seen two that were absolutely destroyed. Van, you'll meet the owner of one at Watkins Glen, as he'll be travelling with me, and we'll be hanging around Bill, Karl, et al (we are wait listed for garage space, so if one opens up, we might actually be there with you).

I just did a clutch job on a '91 S2 last week that had the original rubber centered clutch from the factory. The car had 106,000 and while the friction surface was worn down to about a millimeter of the rivets, I was somewhat amazed that the rubber was in great shape. I think that proper centering and careful cross torqueing on installation has a lot to do with longevity. I use a cut down end of a drive shaft for centering instead of the plastic thing that they sell. Also of note, this car is very well maintained and is auto-x frequently.

Bill got 2 or 3 garage spaces, and I got 1... so hopefully we'll be able to squeeze all together!

Noise, Vibration and Harshness.

Among the other handy abbreviations is "JDA" - Just Driving Along, which is what someone claims they were doing before some improbable part failure occurs.

Thanks, good to know!

One day, humans will communicate predominantly with acronyms. Then, a new language will evolve where people pronounce the acronyms as words. The root words will be considered archaic and fall out of use. Over time, communication will get briefer and less articulate, until there's a vocabulary of 10 primal base words like fod (food) and suk (sex), and some various grunts that express slightly more complicated emotions.

Yes, the S2 had a rubber center clutch, at least in 1989. I know, 'cause I just replaced mine. Traveling to WG with 67King. Looking forward to meeting Van. Your vinyl PCA Club Racing decal looks great on my trailer! On the wait list for garage space, if anyone has any they want to relinquish let me know. F1rocks doesn't need one. His castle is his trailer. BTW......F1Rocks, hope we don't spend time together with the scruts like Road Atlanta! Cookout, maybe.
