Default Cat Delete With Premuffler?

I read all of the cat delete threads I could find and none of them mentioned deleting the cat if your car already has a premuffler. After 25 years and 110,000 miles mine must be on it's way out the door, so I'd like to delete it while my exhaust is off of the car. I've been thinking about taking some rebar and bashing the guts out, but I'm worried about sounding like a Honda. Has anyone out there bashed the guts out of the cat and just used the premuffler without welding in a resonator, glass pack, or high flow cat?

I would replace your cat with something whether it be a glass pack or some other resonator.

Are you keeping the stock rear muffler?

My car doesn't have the stock muffler. It appears to be some sort of cheap Auto Zone brand muffler. I was planning to replace it with a Dansk muffler when my tax refund comes and I make a killing selling stuff at Hershey.

Worse things than sounding like a Honda. Bashing the guts out will do wonders to your lungs.

I replaced my cat with a muffler, in the same location where the cat was. It lasted about two sessions on track before blowing the guts out of it. Don't know if its the proximity to the engine, higher temperature but it didn't last long.

I always do it with a shop-vac handy to suck up all the grit.

I've gutted a few cats. The car has a deeper tone but doesn't sound like it's a ricer.

I'd gut it and be done with it.

I'll bash them out sometime this week and see what it's like. If it sounds like **** then I'll get something welded in.

Your lungs have a greater surface area than your skin. They also don't repair themselves very well. Not good to expose them to catalytic converter dust. Look up restrictive lung disease, like pneumoconiosis from inhalation of dust. Very small particles work their way into the ends of your lungs where they get stuck. That includes the whatever fiberglass or asbestos material is lining it, the platinum used as a catalyst and other metals. That causes chronic irritation, eventually leading to breathing impairment and an increased risk of cancer.

Worth it compared to the cost of welding in a straight pipe or muffler?

Definitely worth a few bucks to get something like this if your going to gut your cat, or do anything that kicks up dust on your car.

I was planning to wear a painters mask and some goggles. Would that not be enough? I'll see what I can pick up at Hershey before I bash it apart.

Has anyone tried one of these?

What's the length of the stock cat? The NA exhaust is 2 1/4 inches, correct? I saw it mentioned in a few threads, but no feedback on it.

Painters mask is for organic vapors (evaporated paint in the air), not dust particles. You want a mask for dust.

I'm glad you warned me then! I guess I'll pick up one of those mufflers I linked and have an exhaust shop weld it in for me.
