Yes, that does help. Thanks butters, and thanks Arominus. Arom, what new kit might there be? The new shifter linkage, which reduces play by using 2 bearings, is also interesting. Does anyone have this?

Got permission to reveal only944's new product. See Spencer(V2)'s thread, first post, "Part II". It will be super reasonably priced, look pretty, and get the job done.

Also, I appreciate the inside tip, butters!

So should I get the short shifter or the standard shifter? Any compelling reason for one over the other, or is it just preference and replacing the worn parts is the real benefit?

Then follow this link to see how to rebuild your shift lever better than factory for cheap (this alone makes a huge difference):

The combo of the two is amazing and worth every penny.

I'm pretty excited. Following the thread above, I paid about $25 for parts to improve or eradicate (1) slop at the lever and (2) slop at the transmission-end linkage pivot (located on top of the transmission housing). This is after some good improvement by changing the transaxle fluid last weekend.
Next i'd have to swallow the $85+ bill for the short shifter....unless i can find a couple parts separately. 2 or 3 of those parts look pretty custom.
by the way, that mcmaster website is cool with all the different pieces.

It's also had a lot of R&D done to it, I don't think you'll be able to replicate it on your own. Suck it up and buy the only944 one. It's well made, and you'll be supporting a fellow enthusiast who continues to make awesome parts for our cars.

The short shifter from Only944 looks a lot better than the Schnell. I had the Schnell on my car and it rusted as soon as a rainy road looked at it funny. The stainless steel on the Only944 should last better I think.
