Question Why so many rear-wiper deletes?

I see it looks like most cars have a rear-wiper delete (or maybe didn't come with)?

My car has this... I was thinking of adding it back... why not?

Thx.

If you're stuck in traffic in a heavy rain the wiper is an attractive option. But even in a heavy rain, once you're over 20mph the water comes off and the air over the glass keeps the rest of the rain from even falling...

IIRC the rear wiper was, at least on the earlier cars, part of the "grand Touring" package. This included cruise control, headlight washers and the rear wiper. This is not to say that dealers or customers may have ordered the rear wiper independent of the other options. At the end of production most options were standard equipment whether you wanted them or not, especially on the Turbo S cars.

A lot of the '89s didn't have them. The hatches don't even have the holes for them.

Deleted when i bought her but truly un-needed with RainX and at least 20mph of wind movement.
Although... I could've used it during a heavy snowfall in stop-go traffic.
Rear Defroster fought mightily to keep up.

Why? I took mine out because of the weight to benefit ratio. As mentioned, almost zero benefit. That motor is pretty heavy. Plus it was one more wiper to buy (even though I usually moved one of the front ones to the back when it was time for replacement).

I love mine, its useful in snow and in rain as the angle of the hatch makes prone to build up. On a DD its nice. On a track car its worthless. I've had no lifting issues even at highway speeds.

I took it off my last track car. I still have it on this one. Don't know why.... It's been 5 years. I bought the delete plug and everything. I think it has some European cool about it, but I rarely use it and it's in the way when I need to wipe the hatch down with a paper towel....doesn't fold up nice like the fronts.

My motor was starting to get sketcy when I bought it, so I deleted the whole thing. Also, for years a PO somewhere left it on the wrong spline, so it kept hitting the spoiler and eventually marred it (the spoiler. Who does that?)

My car is an '88 and came with the wiper, cruise, but no headlight washers. Thos washers are worthless, too - my last 951 had them, and I would constantly bump the stalk lever and spray nasty water all over my clean black paint. AARRGGHH!

Living in AZ, I don't need much of that stuff. I am not even sure if the rear defroster/fogger works.

It is more for snow than rain, as posted above. Snow is rare around here and it looks cleaner without the wiper so in the pile it went, want to buy it?

I deleted it on my first 944 because I never needed it, and immediately my hatch stayed open without a prop stick. Already gone on my second one, and not missed.

I like the rear wiper - looks cool and it's great for clearing off rain in the morning before you back it out. Not sure why so many people take them off.
