I'm thinking of getting one of those tool less oil drain plug. Has anyone ever heard of one of these things failing and draining all of the oil.

I have never heard of it happening. Buy one and look at it and you will see that would be pretty hard to do.
This is the Japanese valve I'm talking about. Company that makes it starts with a F.

performanceproducts.com has it for $20.
If you dont like them er something automotion.com has it for $30.
Search for "oil valve" on either site.
I just ordered mine a night or 2 ago.

It looked at these before, but I passed because I could not see how all of the old oil would drain – particularly any larger particles that had settled on the bottom of the pan.
If I am correct, these drains screw into your existing drain opening. This means that there is a lip that will prevent the last bit of oil and sediment from draining.
When changing oil I like to pour a little fresh oil and let it drain until is see no more old oil coming out. I then stick my little finger into the drain hole to see if there is any residual build-up or metal shavings on the bottom of the pan.
Just playing devils advocate.
