Live with it.

You can clean the fuel tank level sender contacts under the rear hatch carpet--may help.

Your early 944 has the same fuel tank level sender as the 924S.

Your sender is "sticky". If you pull the sender, get a new rubber gasket.

I do not advise cleaning the sender because it normally will make things worse--you will certainly break the thin wire inside the sender.

Here is more info and DIY:

The solution is to buy a new sender. Old/used senders will have the same problems.

Locally, we had a problem with Citgo gas being refined with too much sulfur in it. Was causing gauges to become erratic like yours or show empty when there was a full tank and vice versa. The stations were giving out bottles of some fuel system cleaner (forget which one) which seemed to do the trick. You had to put in the cleaner then fill up your tank to make sure the slider contacts or potentiometers were submerged. Maybe try a couple bottles of Chevron Techron or Seafoam?

Thumbs up

Has you car ever been hit in the rear? I had this problem for 5 years and lived with it but what was really driving me bananas was at a 1/4 tank she would start to sputter on high G right handers, in the end there were 2 problems:
1- the unit that reads the level and goes up and down on 2 little wires inside the tube were bent a little some how and the little nut that hold the bottom of it together was at the bottom of the tank.

2- there is a plastic bowl inside the tank that the unit goes down into. My car was hit in the rear in it's first racing chapter which must of dislodged it partially. In her 2nd chapter, I flipped her and that actually detached it from it place and floated around freely. At that point the fuel starvation was now happening regardless of the fuel level.

I suggest you open pull out the little unit, inspect it and I am pretty certain you will find the problem their. if not, then grab a flashlight and something long enough to go in their and try to move the white plastic bowl around to see if she moves.

Hope this helps!

You have a gas gauge that moves? Wow, I sure could use one of those!
