Post Ignition Question: Nology vs. MSD

hey guys i have a question and a small decision here. Currently, I have a Nology Ignition on my car (coil, wires, spark amp). Lately I've been readin' some good stuff about MSD in these 944s. I am looking at an MSD 6A igntion unit and looking at some custom wires for it along with Blaster 2 coil. I am open to suggestions here. Should I keep my Nology or should it go?

Also a question about the wires. My uncle is good at sizing custom wire sets to cars and he'll have no problem sizing them for a Porsche 944. But, I have found Taylor 10.4 mm and 8mm wiresets already cut and sized from places like Huntley Racing and Speed Force Racing? Any suggestions? Thanks for reading I appreciate it

I recently added an msd 6a and blaster 2 coil to my early 85 and the engine idles much smoother.I'm pleased with the msd unit. but having said that I can't tell you if it's because the old, stock coil was on it's last legs or if there is really a difference. I haven't used nology wires -so I can't help you but I would definately spend the cash for the msd.

does msd contain the capacitor effect of the nology?

Two important points: The capacitor effect of the nology wires is snake oil, and MSD does not work at higher RPMs, it is more for cruise MPG.

That's the first I've heard of this as I know of a few people using MSD components at the track without problems. The Blaster 2 coil I'm using is working great so far.

Where did you hear that they don't work at higher rpms?

That's true for ALL "multi-spark" ignitions...MSD, Crane, Jacobs, etc. That feature only works below a certain RPM (I think 2000rpm). Beyond that, it is a single spark, but with a higher output depending on your setup.

I used a Crane HI-6S with an LX-91 coil and I was happy with it. If you have a Turbo with modifications (14+psi), you will certainly notice a difference in power. N/A cars won't benefit nearly as much...the mixture isn't as dense. But you might still notice something in terms of smoothness or willingness to rev.

I was wondering about trying either the Jacobs or the Nology stuff this time around. How do you like the Nology stuff?

MSD's run in single spark mode over 3K RPM:

They 'work' over 3K RPMs but they do not do anything special, as far as I know. Maybe there is not enough time to strike more sparks, certainly not soon enough to matter.

Youll love the 6A/Blaster coil combo.

I'll recommend Clewett Engineering wires from Pelican. They "are 8mm, with a 2 layer silicone jacket, wrapped in a 1200 degree protective sleeve. This Spiral Core, resistor conductor wire provides EMI/RFI suppression for all ignition and engine management systems. The connector ends are even numbered to reduce confusion"
At $84 they are the best wires out there for our cars IMO.

After having removed the MSD Blaster coil and 6A I had in my car recently, because it had started to malfunction after less than a year, I think I can say with a fair bit of certainty that it did a whole lot of nothing. I am pretty sure the maintenance I performed on the car at the same time I installed all the MSD crap was responsible for any performance improvements the car experienced.

EDIT correction, I left the coil. I only removed the 6A ignition box

on another note... i was told by "brian" at A. Bauer here in Oakland that they use Beru for plugs and wires; and he says that they are the most consistent on the market. For the NorCal dudes, that's Downtown Oakland (http://www.abauer.com/).
