Thanks for the picture Slevy, you obviously had to cut eh? Did you do that yourself? I swear installers in the states are way better than they are here. Everyone I've talked to said it couldn't be done without extreme modifications (fitting the 6.5's or 5.25's in the front) and that it wouldn't be worth it. I'm not mechanically inclined so there's no way I could fabricate anything, and I wanted to keep the costs somewhat down. Adie, do you have a picture of your pods? I would love to see them (geeze that could be taken the wrong way hah) Thanks for the responses guys keep them up.

Yes, minor sheetmetal cutting in the door. I had a pro do it. That way if anything screwed up, he'd have to fix it. It's been in for about 2 yrs now, no problems.

I was thinking of forming new interior door panels out of fibreglass, and using the space that is normally used for the map pockets, for stereo equipment.

Putting 6 1/2" speakers in the front requires almost no modification. All you need are the right size extention rings that you can get from a stereo installer. The rings are about $30 for the pair. You can get the rings in different "heights", depending on the amount of mounting depth that you have and/or the depth of the speakers.

See my full install here.

Like MAS said, you can install a 6.5" fine with a spacer. I built my own, and they turned out pretty good, too:

My system:
[LIST][*]Panasonic CQ-DF600U Head Unit[*]Panasonic 8 CD changer[*]Alpine V12 F357 5 Channel amp (mids)[*]Infinity 600w*1 amp (subs)[*]Pioneer 6.5" compression horn speakers.[*]2 Blaupunkt 12" Subs, combined 800w RMS 2400w Max

Let me tell you, those Pioneer 6.5" compression horn speakers are top notch! I got four of them, but I don't know if I'll put in the rear two. The front's are loud enought to blow out your ears by themselves. I may put in a 4x6 in the center channel, though. Cept NOBODY sells single 4x6 speakers.

with the mdf spacers would the dash interfere? I thought it would be hard to close the door properly with the speakers sticking out that much. I appreciate the responses guys, thanks a lot

No... even though it looks that way, the speakers actually come nowhere even close to interferring with either the dash or your legs. Try experimenting by using a small cookie tin top (or something similar), and see for yourself. 6 1/2" speakers mounted in these doors really sound excellent. This is largely due to the fact that the 944/924 doors are very solid and tight. The whole door actually acts like a huge speaker.

Jon has larger extention rings than I do. This is probably because his speakers have a slightly greater depth than my Pioneer TS-606's. My front speakers are not mounted out quite as far, because the TS-606's need a little less depth.

MAS I just noticed that you're in victoria... I'm just across the way in Tsawassen/Ladner. Could you recommend a good installer perhaps? Thanks for the encouragement, I'm determined to find somebody competent enough to get these 6 1/2's in! Thanks again

Hi Marooned... yes, I can recommend the guys who installed my stereo system a few months ago. They've done lots of Porsches (they have a 944 of their own), which is why I went there. The address is:

"Island Audio"
1620 Blanchard St,
Vicoria, BC.,
V8W 2J7
(Fax 250-384-3929)
Phone # 250-384-3929

(they have the install shop right next to the showroom)

The guy I was dealing with was Rainer Willeke, so just ask for him, as he really knows his stuff... he's not just a salesman, as he knows lots about installs.

Tell him that you're interested in the Pioneer TS-606 speakers for the front. When I was checking out speakers, we went through lots of different options, these were the best and most robust speakers for the available space (without having to use extra large extention rings or doing too much cutting).

You can remind him that he installed the same
speakers (plus system) 3 months ago in a white 87 Porsche 924S for a guy called "Martin" (me ).

email me if you have any other questions.

I have a year old sony head unit, with Brand new Sony Explod 5-1/4 for the mids to be powered with 200 watt kenwood amp, and i have 2 12in pioneer 250 watt subs in a custom box and that is powered by a 600 watt kenwood amp. All of that for only $300 (and the explods for graduation 2 mons ago) Future expansion, maybe a CAP but definatly a EQ.
