Default 944S2 running hot

New owner, not sure if I should be concerned but drove my car today (cold day 38F) mostly city, stop lights etc. Once home the temp was 3/4 high and fans kicked in. I thought it was strange that this would happen on such cold day.
Also, my oil pressure gauge shakes between 4-5 on idle but stays fairly close to 5 when on the move. I thought that this might have something to do with my engine mounts but they have been just replaced.
Any advice is much appreciated, thanks.

3/4 high is quite unusual unless you stack in traffic quite a lot. I would check coolant levels first. Oil pressures you are getting are quite good.

Let us know the car's details...
Maint history, miles, recent services, etc..

Agree, 3/4 is normal in traffic ( scared me to death when I first got my car 10 years ago to), but moving you should be no higher than the 1/2 way point. Mine usually stays between1/4 and 1/2 unless I am at a light or stuck in traffic. At that point it will creep up to 3/4 and the fans kick on and it immediately drops down again. If all levels are good you may want to look into a slightly lower temp fan switch.

Yes, check coolant level, then check your radiator fin for dirt or grass, I have a 1991 944S2 Cab, my was getting hot, but it's time for a water pump and timing belt

Thank you guys, all this information is very helpful. Here's little more about the car, it's a 90 S2 with 85K miles, comes with what I would consider a full service history. I've purchased the car from an older fella (85) who couldn't drive it any longer, for the last year and a half the car was only driven once or twice a week but he kept up the maint. From the service records I can see that the timing belt was replaced 4 times, most recent at 81K in late 2010 at that time the front of the engine was resealed, I don't believe that the water pump was replaced, but the thermostat was replaced in 2006 at 76K, at 69K in late 2004 timing belt and water pump were replaced and the jfront of the engine was resealed as well. The timing belt was also replaced at 44K. Clutch replaced at 64K So, the records that I have show 3 owners and total over $32K in maint. cost. No accident car and the PPI mentioned that the engine mounts needed replacing so I did have that done using OEM dealer purchased mounts. That's my car. Thanks again for all the help!

My 89 S2 acts in a similar fashion. Remember these cars have only the electric fans so in traffic the temp will raise, then the fans turn on to cool things down. Scary until you get used to it.

I'd buy an infrared gun and verify head temp on the intake side right at the coolant sensor.. both at idle and then while moving. (j/k)
But at least in a parking lot once the 3/4 mark is hit..

Sounds like a peach of a '44.. Congrats!

I would be concerned, check coolant level and you might bleed any air out of the system. It is pretty easy to bleed, search the forum.

Bleed the cooling system just to know its bled.
You could try cleaning the grounds at the back of the engine. That bought me ~ half a division on the temp gauge. Do any gauges jump a little when you turn on big electrical loads (headlights, AC)?

No, no gauge jumping, as I drive the car more and more I see that as long as a keep moving the temp stays around 1/2 way or just above it but once in traffic it goes up and the fans kick in then turn on...I'll bleed the system, can't hurt and front what I'm hearing helped most of you...again kind thanks for all the help!
