At the Toronto Auto show today I couldn't help comparing the seat experience of the Scion Fr S and Subaru BRG with the 944. The dimensions and power seems about the same and I wondered if any here has road experience with these cars.

Thanks for the link Keith. And yes it's Z. It seems pretty good value for the money, at the show the MSRP was shown at 27K, and there's not much new to be had for that money let alone fun stuff.

well the FRS and twins need some help in the styling dept. but better than a miata. I cant see how porsche is stupid enough to NOT make a "normal sports car" for the average guy. I saw pics of a cayman with the rear hatch open and its just a joke, you cant carry anything in there. and the styling on that too is pretty bland.
Id say the FRS is more like 944-lite. Porsche needs to come in and show'em what's what.
I think a new 944 would be the PERFECT car right now.

We were at the show yesterday also and spent some time with the sales rep.We walked away going mehhh,27000 for base plus a few options and some taxes and you are easily at 35000.That buys a used Cayman,a newer Boxster S or a pretty sweet 911. I think a few track days with the BRZ and you wouldnt be a happy camper. At the very least wait for the turbo IMHO

Careful what you wish for. I remember what happened to the 924 when the 944 hit the market in '83. You couldn't give one away. Not to mention that we would see alot of the aftermarket vendors for the 944 disappear. I would hate to see history repeat itself. Just say'n.

Porsche had the small, lightweight, front-engined sports car to themselves in the 80's. Before that we had Alfa, MG, Lotus, Triumph, etc. Since then it seems European manufacturers don't want to compete with what the Asian market is putting out. I still think the 944 transaxle design is far greater than anything else ever produced in this sector.

there are plenty of modern 944's... but, unfortunately the 944ish cars being built nowadays, all suffer with significantly underpowered fartcan motors....(i think of them as more like 924's)....and while they certainly are capable, nifty machines, they will continue to fill a similar market as the old 924s's did back in the day (adjusted for the extra 100 million people living here now) and unfortunately, nothing will be done for these modern editions (like adding 60~120 more hp for top of the line offerings) to really get them where the true enthusiast desires them to be.
the modern 944's are right on this forum. and while i think the original 944 is one of the most remarkable, incomplete car designs ever... and despite that i'm not very fond of the engines (including the turbo and 968), many guys on this board continue to complete these cars with boundless aplomb.
two splended examples.....

Which one looks better to you guys? the BRZ/toyota/whatever or the 944?
For some reason the BRZ looks good...but compared to the 944 it just looks CHEAP.
The 944 looks like the more expensive and better car, and looks like it can carry more stuff in the back too.

The 944 wasn't really a cheap car when it was made. The n/a might have been more reasonable, but i know my Turbo and S2 were both nearing the $40k mark in the late 80's.
I appreciate seeing more small "sporty" cars on the road, but the BR-Z and FT-86 are more Miata than 944. They're underpowered and cheap, although i still have trouble calling $30,000 "cheap" (since that is more than i have into both of my cars combined, and my 944 would make a BR-Z look like it was standing still on any kind of track).
Here is a review (when asked about S2000 vs. BRZ) from another forum and an experienced driver (who is now selling his BR-Z):

Good and bad as they are obviously different:
S2000 is faster, especially in vtec even against an I/E/Tune BRZ
BRZ is much faster at low RPMs by feel.
BRZ has a lot more cargo room and much more quiet.
Handling is similar ultimately but feels very different, overall the S2000 is definitely better stock vs stock
BRZ changes direction faster but puts down power very poorly
Both have good seats, slightly prefer BRZ
Both have good shifters, prefer S2000
I could go on but you get the idea. I'm selling my BRZ because it couldn't be the one car I wanted (I sold two cars to get it). I really want one faster style car (my WRX) and one handling style car like I had before (Boxster). So I'll sell the BRZ and actually probably replace it with an Cayman S, Elise, or an S2000. Not really sure yet.

I have driven an FR-S Scion, sticker was $25k. Nice car, but not really on the level of build quality as our cars. The closest car it compares to is the RX8 really, which I owned one for 5 yrs. Light steering, nimble, balanced, with usuable space, but seriously lacking low end grunt... one of the reasons I chose to step away from my RX8 before dumping a ton more money into rebuilding an unreliable, underpowered car. The Toyosuba isn't a bad platform and with more power could be alright. I just don't think Porsche could or should produce anything at that price point. I do agree a more stripped down track oriented budget minded type of car would be nice, but would probably come in much more expensive than this car.
