This sounds like you're volunteering. There's a lot of info in this thread alone - so start there!

Any symptoms? Is there a fix? Or is the entire gearbox junk?

Sounds like something that could be caused by lack of maintenance?

I've had an 84 for almost 3 years now and love it.I agree with the vintage feel when driving it.It's less insulated and much simpler. It feels so visceral when you are driving it,you know exactly what the car is doing.I also see story after story and post after post about the inferior a/c and lousy heat ducts and so on....I've driven it in freezing weather, pouring rain, super hot summer days and my windows never fog up,I actually have to turn the a/c down most times and the heater will burn your eyes out!The older, the simpler, the less things to go wrong because it has less things to go wrong.I get more thumbs up on the road with my guards red, black fuchs than most 911's get.People just don't see many of these on the road anymore. And yes I de it at the track and autocross and it thanks me every time.I swear it never runs better than when I'm on the way home from the track after a hard day of flogging it.

IIRC there is a thread around here somewhere that exlpained why it happens. IIRC It isnt/wasnt a lack of maintence, but the casing for the spider gears are weak from the factory.

Reason I ask, is the one car that I like and owner is very honest, just happens to be the one with 2nd gear grind.
