Question Tip vs. 6 speed

I'm looking to get my first 968 and I've seen alot of cars out there with the tiptronic, if someone could help me out with the cons/pros of it that would be great. I'd be happy getting a 6 speed, but the SO would like to be able to drive the new ride as well, and I was wondering how horrible the performance sacrafice would be. I've heard that you can loose as much as 30 RWHP because of it. I hope this doesn't cause too much of a flame war. Help, as always, is appreciated.

Not sure about loss HP, but you will be a tad slower. Having owned my 944 auto for 6 months now, I not only wish I had a 5speed, but also a Turbo

Had a fun ride at 100 last night on the tail of a 911, and think I could have matched him had I had a turbo

Anyway, my wife has a tiptronic Passat, and I think its a blast to drive, since you can stay in auto during traffic congestion, and play with the gears at other times. My only concern would be the durability of the 968 tip, which might prove EXPENSIVE to fix. Of course a new clutch ain't cheap either, when the dealer does it. Try discussing this over at 968.net...

968's dont take 12 hours to replace the clutch on like a 944. You don't have to drop the tranny and torque tube (it is like a 928 that way).

The Tip will not have the Pinion bearin problem that the 6-speed can have.

Personally, I would go for a 6-speed.

You can find actual (?) performance numbers over at 968.net for both Tip & 6-speed, for comparison purposes.

If you're into go-fast, get the 6-speed. In traffic, 6th is good on a level road from ~30 mph or less, on up, so there's not a lot of _required_ shifting.

But do also read up on the pinion gear bearing problem.

Jim, very happy with the 6-speed... _very_ happy!

I had a SO that had never driven a stick... she actually cried the whole time we spent in a parking lot.. teaching her to just get the car going with out throttle and not stalling it.... but she now prefers a stick over an automatic... My 2 cents....

I agree with billybones. My current SO couldn't drive a stick, until I tought her. Well, actually, she had a little expierience with one. But she claimed she couldn't drive it.

So I tought her. Well, actuall she is still learning. But she is out of the parking lot. She just hasn't driven in heavy traffic yet. She was just afraid of hurting my car. After I explained that almost anything she did would not hurt my car, and explained the 2 thing she could do to hurt my car (overrevving, and letting the clutch out durring a shift) she was fine.

However, I relize that some people can not drive a stick for reasons of physical disability.

I think she is just worried about hurting any car that I do decide to get, its not like she is physically disabled, or completly incompetant, she has just never driven a stick before. Looks like I'll just try and get the best condition car I can and not worry about what tranny is in there.

I have heard many complaints about the power loss of the tip on the 968.

have you asked over at 968.net?

I would just teach them to drive stick.
