DO NOT hone your cylinders

DO NOT hone your cylinders
I am rebuilding my 86 951 after 176K. I noticed some scoring on the cylinder walls due to the skirt. I sent my block to Powerhaus in Arizona and had them bore it 0.5mm over and ordered new Mahle pistons. They actually had the machine necessary to properly hone the cylinders and replace the silicon coating. DO NOT hone the cylinders yourself. It requires quite a special process and most machine shops are not equiped either.

I think Porsche used it on the 959, the 928, as well as the 944/968 series. I know the Carrera GT uses the same silicone coating, but I think other Porsche models also have this treatment, anybody know for sure?

Does anyone have any details on how this process is done or a reference ?? I would like to understand the mechanics of how the coating is applied and the pros and cons for this vs sleeving in a rebuild. My mechanic said that he sends his blocks to California from Seattle for coating because "no one does it localy". --Roy--

Skip: Last year, When I was shopping for a 944, I located a 87 944S in Seattle with a piston through the side (?) due to hydrolock. I checked with Paul Weir about a rebuild price. At that time they didn't have printed material on 944's (don't know about now), they did send me a "book" about their 911 process and said that the 944 rebuild would be similar..... hmmmm I had forgotton about that, will check the Paul Weir "book" tonight for cylindar coating info.
