Default '83 944 LSD tranny into '87 924S?

Looks like I have the opportunity to pick up a transaxle with limited slip diff, out of a 1983 944. The idea would be to put it into my '87 924S. I'm under the impression that this is a straightforward swap. Anybody think otherwise?

Also, the axles on my car seem OK, but they are 26 years old. Would this be the time to swap them out as well?

It will fit, but I am not sure if all the gears are the same. As for the axles I would just repack them and call ita day.

Swap the short fifth in you current transmission if you're going to to any track duty with it.

Does the late 924S have a sensor pickup in the tranny for the speedometer? If so, you wont have that in the early transmission, they picked up speedometer from the driver side front tire through the spindle.

Can't recall, did the 924S use the late transmission mount? If so, you'll just take the mounting brackets off the early style and mount everything from you late tranny (one piece mount vs. two piece on early car)

My speedo is run off the left front wheel, so that should be the same as the early 944 trans. I'm not sure about the transmission mount. I'll check that out.

Thanks guys!

The 924S and early 944 use the same transmission mount.

As I recall from changing a clutch on a 944, swapping out a transmission is a reasonably simple task.

On a scale of 1 to 10, with the tranny swap being a 5, where does swapping out the 5th gear place?

You take the 5th gear out and sell it to StoogeMoe. Then you don't have to worry about swapping it.

Should swap straight in, with zero issues, the 924s uses the early style mounts and everything else should be the same.

If your interested i have a set of the pelican semi solid trans mounts that were on my 924S for all of 7 months. I'd sell for $120 shipped, this would be the perfect time to swap to them! I also recommend a set of locking CV bolts from Ideola (the stage 8's).
