Post To tint or not to tint?

I submit this question to simply know what is others opinion of what looks good. I have been thinking about tinting the glass on my 85-1/2 944. I am concerned about the rear defrost strips though. But also I have noticed that in most pictures in mags and soforth the windows usually are not tinted and I must say I favor the non tinted look. No one would blame me for tinting, down here in the 100+ degree Texas summer sun. But thats for another posting. Whats your opinion?

Tint really looks good if you have it done by a quality place. I've got 20% in the rear three windows and 35% in the two front windows, and the windshield was left alone so I can see clearly at night. The tint really compensates the rest of my car...I recommend it but it's expensive, mine set me back over $300 to have done right.

Dave,

I say, find some nice looking tint, a real artist who can install it. and GO FOR IT. If any one hassles you for "tampering" with you car or what not, tell them to "shove it" because you have a D@mn good excuse. More power to you.

btw pardon my language tonight.

I have tint on my 87 924S... and it looks really good.

Hey, PorscheG96... am I reading you right? You have more tint on your side windows than the back? Isn't that backwards? You need the most tint on the large rear window, considering its angle. Also, in many places it's illeagal to even tint the passenger side windows (mine are tinted, but not as much).

Your reading him 180 off, I think.
20% in back means thats all the amount of UV light that gets through and 35% being not as dark lets 35% of UV through.
But what about the defrost strips?

I am tinting my windows with 20%.. same stuff the new VW's come with. Mostly black with a silver hue in some light. I might go all black.. still undecided.

Tinting is easy if you take your time, make sure the windows are clean, and you have a reasonable idea on how to do it.

You should also remove all the windows (rear hatch is an exception).

I really like the look of tint if the car is Guards, Maroon, or Zermatt! Blacks and Blues do not look as good with it.

In regard to your question about the defroster strips--I've had a car with the tint over the defroster and no problem whatsoever. I agree with the other guys, if done by a quality place with good material, there will be no problem. I think it would definitely be in order for Texas sun. I'd do it----in fact I'm going to have my car done this spring before the high sun comes up.

Thanks to my friends bag of magic tricks, I just easily striped all of my purple crapy tint that the PO had. In AZ tint is not an option, it is a need. My friend works at an auto detailer and he says the best tint is this stuff made by Madico. The major concern is not that people will say you defiled your windows, but that a nervous trooper will pull his piece because he can't see in your car. Try to stay within the legal limits of your local laws concerning tint. As was stated, the lower the percentage the darker. Thus the more you are at risk of being illegal. Here is a helpfull tool:

Just a second on Bob's comment on legal limits. They vary all over the place. Here, the annual state inspection is $5.00 higher if you have tint, because the inspection station has to use a meter to measure the darkness of the tint to insure that it is within legal limits before they OK the car. So definitely find out what's legal before sinking your $$$ & time into something that will have to come off.

And yes, I had a friend who got pulled over years back for heavy window tint... didn't get that ticket, but got busted for DWI... .

Again, per Bob, if & when I get pulled, I _want_ the cop to be able to see me... don't want some rookie with a gun getting nervous when I'm what's downrange!

Jim, wouldn't want to count on Maggie's drawers...
