Default Difficult starting after rain.

I'm having a problem with my 1988 944.

It's getting increasingly difficult to start after its been left out in the rain. The starter is fine, it turns over okay but wont catch.

I feels like a water leak somewhere.

Any ideas?

Water pooling and getting to or inside the DME box is first.

Then water on the sensors - the Hall Effect sensor is a prime target. With the reference sensor it lets the ECU know when the piston is coming up for firing stroke.

Here is a thread . I think it may be 968, but it is similar. I am sure there are others too.

Water in the DME, going through the rust holes under your battery is most likely like TexasRider stated.

Alternately, I'd suspect the AFM. I've had problems with them in the wet in the past (on non-P cars)

My first thought is the water in the DME through a rusted hole from the battery, too. I had this problem a long time ago before fixing it with fiberglass.

Great ideas. Thank you. I'll start checking.

Its a DD and lives outside (in Seattle!) so its seen a lot of rain. It owes me nothing really.

We have an S2 track rat with the same problem if it rains. Car doesn't want to start in the morning at the track if it is wet. Pull the AFM connector off, blow on it, plug it back in and it always starts. No visible moisture in it ever, but for some reason that does the trick. Never has an issue when it is dry, or if the engine is warm when wet.

Yep water on the DME. Check and see if your carpet is wet on the floorboard passenger front. Remove battery, reseal tray, and I even drilled two drain holes at the front of the tray. All that of course after you change out the DME. If it has gotten wet I wouldn't trust it much after that.

Moisture in the distributor cap I'd say.

Spray your distributor cap & ignition wires with silicone (Wirer Dyer - it's a spray). If it works, I would replace your wires for sure.
