Default pre 85.5 mounts on late 944 transmission

From what I gather from searching the forums, I can install any 944 transmission in an early 944. But I couldn't find a clear answer on whether i can just unbolt my early transmission mounts from my dead transmission and bolt them onto a late 944 transmission. ...or do I need to do some fabrication or drilling?

I know I don't need the speedo sensor. would I need to plug the hole?

I would also like to know the what the differences in gearing are. will my car feel slower or faster with an S or S2 or 951 transmission (if that happens to be what I find).

I know the early mounts can bolt right on to an '86 turbo transmission... I don't know about later transmissions.

A NA 944 would feel slower with an S2 or a 951 transmission (but also get better fuel economy). I don't know about the gearing in the 944S - I think it might only be 5th gear that's different.

If the late trans has no cooler it will bolt on. If it does you can make an adapter plate to make it work. Btdt. 951 trans in NA does not make a noticeable difference around town but will be faster on the highway. Been running a. 951 trans over 3 years now, one of the best things I've done to the car.

The main difference is in the ring and pinion - so effectively all gears are taller.

Easiest route would be calling Comeau Racing at Mission Gorge...619-994-0919 he has at least a dozen transmissions at his shop.

The best transmission I have found for the early cars is the '87 944S transmission( 083D, AGP/AGR ). It will bolt right up and you can either plug the speedometer drive or leave it in. The gearing is a little taller than the 016 G/B ( 9:35 ) but I think you will like it. It is slightly longer than your present G/B but will still clear the spare tire bin. Its a tight fit but a good transmission jack makes the job much easier and safer if you're doing it by yourself. Hope this helps and good luck...Dave
