I have a 1980 Jetta wheel on my 944, if that gives you any information for parts swapping...

Regarding steering wheel clearance, I am 6'6" and have no problem at all with the early column and a wheel that is bigger than stock...

Adding a smaller steering wheel with a flat bottom will gain quite a bit of leg room. I've done this with a couple different cars.

If you add an adaptor or quick release you bring the wheel towards you which in effect raises the distance from the base of the wheel to your legs.
When I first sat in my car with this setup I thought the wheel was very close. This was with an extra long hub as we moved the seat back for the trackcar, but notice virtually all racers have the wheel much closer than was fashionable in days gone by.
The point being, by bringing the wheel a little closer with one of these quick release hubs you won’t lose anything by this transition. You’ll only gain space between wheel and legs as desired.

These are the offset momo adapter plates. We have a few of them left if anyone wants to raise their momo wheel, will not work with the stock steering wheel.
