Default Go ahead with RMS change or wait?

So a while back I put a 951 motor into my 944 after I replaced a bunch of seals. Unfortunately the rear main seal decided to back out- way out. It's pretty much pressed against the flywheel at this point and as you can imagine leaks a ridiculous amount of oil that loves smoking up a storm on my crossover, I'm talking Exxon Valdez not a livable quarter sized spot after a spirited run. There's oil all over the underside of the car from the horrible leaking and whenever I park it in my garage I kick a pan under there to keep it from making a mess.

So anyways I know there is a good chance that at some point I'll have to replace my transmission to handle the power. Would it be easier to wait for when I do it and then change the rear main or does it not have much bearing at all on the difficulty? I'm really dreading going back in and redoing all that clutch stuff but the leaking is quite bad and I have some free time so if the jobs are separate enough I'd like to go ahead and get it over with.

I had a bad RMS leak, not probably as bad as yours, and it began to worry me how much ended up on the down pipe and the heat shield for the cat. Potential fire? (turbo plumbing is a little different, tho)

Why not line up a trans right away?

Change the RMS and replace it with the Elring Seal. With all the oil leaking out you will end up replacing the clutch as it will get oil soaked. The clutch might be ruined already. I wish you luck.

I wanted to go with an LSD but I don't have the $1200+ to drop right yet

So any answers to the original question about if it was much easier to do the rms with the transmission out of the way or not?

Removing the transmission is required either way, depends how much you dread taking it out. Really your only saving yourself maybe 2-3hrs if you do it all in one shot, rather than doing it again at a later date.

If it interests you, i loan out the factory RMS install tool.

you'll have to take the trans out to move the torque tube back to change the rear main seal.

so do it at once.
