Luckily the trans is very easy to replace. You can do it in about 4 hours. The hardest part is cleaning out the bolt heads and removing the cv bolts.

this is the fourth trans I've had in this car...i can do it in 4 hours in my driveway, from jacking the car up to dropping it back to the ground with the new trans installed. It's almost definitely the trans, we'll see for sure when i pull it and drain it, i'm hoping it's not a combination of clutch and trans issues

Mike, thanks for the help man, definitely some good information!
No worries! I like a loose setup as well, on the street. I haven't tried the KW's, would like to though. The helper springs on the KW's aren't the reason for the smooth ride, they do nothing unless the wheel is off (or nearly off) the ground.

this was a turbo trans...an 87 with lower miles in fantastic shape...shifted great, no synchro problems, no gear problems. It was the best trans I've had in this car. BANG.

I'm thinking I'm going to drop some serious coin on an 86 cooler and LSD model, maybe keeping the trans temps a little lower and having a stronger, non-open diff will help
